Three questions with Calvin Newell >>> Tulsa World

I'm pretty sure Calvin has been frustrated by the way his season has gone, but I really hope he sticks it out. I think he has the talent to be a very solid player in this league if he just hangs in there with us.

"you got to take some of the bass out of your voice" I could see him scaring people on the South oval

I would imagine it has been tough for him too. I can't imagine there is anything smooth about losing a parent, moving halfway across the country to a start school, adjusting to the stresses of being a d1 athlete and then struggling with adjusting to playing a position you aren't comfortable playing. I'm sure it is tough for any freshman to adjust to biding your time and taking things slow, but maybe even more so for a guy who was known as a scorer. Struggling like that and not being able to do the one thing you are known for would be pretty tough.

I definitely think that Newell could be a great asset to us after getting some more seasoning. It just takes time, but I think he has the tools necessary to contribute.

Is reality crashing down?

Yes. The Sooners are playing their toughest stretch of the season with a tired team. Coach Jeff Capel acknowledged as much before leaving for Kansas State last week, when he admitted he would have to be careful about practicing his five starters from here on out.

I don't know the context of the quote by Capel. I wonder if he was asked about the teams stamina or if he just offered this little gem up as an excuse.

Someone needs to notify him the 87/88 team had 6 players that played the bulk of the minutes and they weren't tired in late February. Now, they didn't also have the mental toll of losing games wearing on them, but still they were in shape and played a much more up-tempo game.

Sampson had some teams that only had 6 players who played the bulk of minutes, too, and they weren't affected down the stretch.

I agree.

According to Capel, Newell is a lockdown defender. I thought he played pretty good defense on Pullen when he was in the game Saturday for how little he has played this year. I just don't think he is a PG...I think he's better suited for the 2G. IMO, and I've been ripped for this, he has more potential than Pledger who just stands behind the 3 point line.

Yeah, but what was their practice schedule like? I know for a fact the practices from mid to late February and early March are far less intense and more about game planning. There were days where we would just get some shots up, play some 5 on 5 and watch film. Very common, especially for teams who have players that log long minutes.

I guess I don't get your point?

Are you saying Tubbs didn't do this? or did? Or are you saying Capel doesn't do this? Or does?

If you are saying Capel does this, then how does that relate to how Tubbs did it?
