U19 update

Gabbi made the team. I don't have the complete list but don't think Nancy made it.

UConn incoming freshmen Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson as well as Class of 2016 commit Crystal Dangerfield were among the players selected to the U.S. team playing in the FIBA U19 World Championships from July 18-26 in Chekhov, Russia.

UConn Class of 2016 recruiting target Lauren Cox was also selected to the team after three days of trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Rising college sophomores Azura Stevens of Duke, Gabrielle Ortiz of Oklahoma, Shakayla Thomas of Florida State, Chatrice White of Illinois, Mariya Moore of Louisville and A'ja Wilson of South Carolina are joined by Samuelson, Collier, Cox, Dangerfield, Louisville incoming freshman Asia Durr and California commit Kristine Anigwe. Notre Dame freshmen to be Ali Patberg was selected as the alternate as Cox and Dangerfield, the two youngest players in the trials, are the only players with remaining high school eligibility to make any of the three U.S. teams that were named today.

I know that some do not believe ESPN knows anything about player rankings but, when you look at who made the U19 team and see where ESPN had them ranked, it appears the coaches of the U19 team pretty much picked players that ESPN had highly ranked.

I'm not shocked Mulkey didn't make the team... She didn't play that much the last two times she made it. But I hope this will make her work heard and be the best she can be...

I think that a lot of what goes into these selections is determined by how much of an offense or defense the coach thinks he/she can install in what essentially is a semi-pickup game of all-stars. In a pure pick-up game, I don't know that Nancy is a good choice. If you have time to install an offense and defense, I think Nancy might be your first choice.

At about any other position or roster move, the difference between the player and a potential substitute is probably no more than two to five points per game. In a properly-installed defense, Mulkey might make a twenty-point difference by herself. She really does make shooting within fifteen feet of the basket a risk.
