I have noticed the last few years that basketball is not always consistent with the traditional whites at home/colors on the road uniform scheme. Tonight, TCU at Baylor in their whites. Trailblazers at CLE in whites.

Does anyone know if this is just agreed upon before certain games, and if so, how? Are there a bunch of equipment managers brokering uniforms behind the scenes? Has it always been this way? I get the Lakers in gold in lieu of whites, but otherwise this seems odd.

My sources (innerwebs) tell me that the tradition came from baseball and that washing machines weren’t readily available on the road, hence colors on the road. That sounds both outdated and pretty gross.

Thank you in advance. Also, that Young kid is pretty good.

Don't know abut college, but the NBA change was due to Nike providing unis this year. The following is from a Nike press release this summer:

“Coinciding with the introduction of the new uniforms, the NBA is eliminating its “Home” and “Road” uniform designations. Beginning with the 2017-18 season, home teams will pick which of their uniforms will be worn at all home games and visiting teams will choose a contrasting uniform within their own assortment.

Because of this change, Nike and the NBA worked together to create four core uniforms for each team, classified as “editions,” which draw from the rich heritage of the NBA and its respective franchises.”
