Over the past six games, I have noticed some thing very interesting developing with our youngsters on the court. Several of us have posted about it over the time I have been on this board. It's all about want to! Our Sooners are starting to understand that when you want to play defense, when you want to do the dirty work and rebound, when you want to make that extra pass or screen, good things will happen. It almost becomes infectious. Peyton, not one the biggest kids on the court, finds herself in position by wanting to, gets rebounds in the land of giants. The team is playing solid defense and communicating with each other. Their free throw shooting is better every game in this span, probably from wanting to stay late and work on their shots. It is truly amazing to me how each game one of the players light bulbs lights up in their heads and they see the court more clearly. We have seen it with Kaylon, Gioya, Maddie, McKenna, ViVi, LaNesia, etc... They just keep getting better as they play together.

I Posted on another thread about Sherri's post game comments, She said we may not have two or three kids that will give you 18 points a night, but we have 8 or 9 that can give you 10 or 12. Two things about this team really excite me. First they are all about team. Second we now have 9 kids, that when the game is on the line, not a one of those 9 not want the ball, they all do during crunch time. They are not afraid to fail. We saw that last night when Texas took an 8 point lead, and we buckled down and went on a 14-2 run and never looked back. Will we have some failure later on this season, probably will, but I don't think it will because of the lack of effort, or because they don't want to. I think its pretty neat that we have won all four of our conference games by double digits. I'm just waiting for the dam to break and all the kids put in their best effort together on a consistent basis. It could be real soon.

Very good post!

A part of this is having kids that have a mindset that refuses to lose. Gabbi, Peyton, Maddie, and Gioya have a dogfight attitude. I think the rest of the players feed off of that. Even Ritchie has that mindset. I don't know that we had anyone on the court last year with that mindset. Gioya was a freshman, and the rest were on the bench or in highschool.

When Texas wanted to play tough, who stepped up? It seemed that Peyton, Maddie, and Gabbi were determined (Gioya being on the bench). Every time they fouled Maddie, she had a smile. Peyton had the most determined look I had seen on her face this year.

The last game that we lost was the one in which Kay Kay sat on the bench. Any connection?

When Ritchie was announced as a walk on from the tennis team, I remember reading a comment on another board that was very derogatory to her and to Sherri for allowing her to walk on. They said something like what has our basketball team come to? First we get walk ons from the volleyball team and now tennis. Why don't we recruit enough players???? Some people don't understand that it takes all kinds of ingredients to make a good team. One of those ingredients is often a walk on with a bigger than life personality on the bench, in practice and in the locker room. Her enthusiasm is infectious and I bet she really gets after it in practice.

I don't know how anyone could be critical of a walk-on. They are asking a coach for permission to show up at every practice and team meeting, work their tails off, hit the weight room, without a scholarship, all for very little glory or recognition by anyone other than her teammates and coaches. I salute every walk-on who is willing to make those sacrifices knowing their playing time will be very scarce. Ritchie happens to be a fan favorite and I'm glad she is.

I agree with you completely. The insinuation in the post was that Sherri was recruiting so badly that we had to resort to going to the tennis team to fill out the roster.

If there was ever a year in which Sherri has plenty of players, it's this year. She didn't HAVE to have Ritchie. She WANTED Ritchie!

It's probably inevitable that some night something will infect the team with the doldrums. If that's the case then what I'm interested in is whether they increase their determination to win.

Sherri said on her show this week that Ritchie had been the "voice" in the locker room. Internal leadership. Reminding players they were close to putting it together. Holding players accountable. She knows what it takes to win. One thing I have noticed is the chemistry seems to be a lot better this year. Maybe she is one of the reasons for this.

I've lost track of the number of years I've heard that OU doesn't have anything this season. Down year for the Sooners.
Yet they almost always seem to end up near the top of the Big 12.

That tells me one thing: Sherri Coale is a very special coach.
