Instead of hiring an "up and comer" for 600K per year, which was 11th highest in the Big 12 at the time?

Let's say he had been willing to pay 2 million per year for the right person instead of going on the cheap thinking anybody could win at OU.

Would we be in this position?

Depends on the hire...a guy like Altman? We'd be a week removed from the second round of the tourney IMO.

Without the NCAA issues, probably very good. Given the reality of the situation, not much better.

no matter how well you feel Capel did, it is next to impossible to imply he did a better job than anyone else could have; particularly a big money guy, as the post suggests.

I guess I interpreted the question wrong; I thought he meant how much more qualified a candidate could we have hired if we had paid big money.

My response was, not much better, as in there weren't a lot of guys jumping to take the job with the mess Sampson left.

But I agree, It wouldn't have been real hard to do better than Capel.

ahh, I see

Depends on the hire, but I liked the Capel hire 5 years ago. I was ecstatic about it. On paper, it was a decent hire. Obviously, knowing what I/we know now, it wasn't. I still think Capel will be a decent coach somewhere if he decides to stick around the college game. He just made some really bad decisions at OU, and dug himself a hole he wasn't going to be able to get out of.

But if we're talking Altman, or someone "blah" like that, then no.

The Sampson telephone calls was a non-issue. OU self reported and self imposed penalties. The severe year was over. OU had a one scholarship reduction for the first season with Capel and was two or three players short of a full team. It had zero impact and any coach that can count to 13 could have seen that.

Capel had just finished 5th in the Colonial and Joe C hired him and you were ecstatic?

What if Joe hires another mid-major coach who is coming off a 5th place finish?

My expectations are a little higher for The University of Oklahoma. A top 25 coach or I'll be disappointed.

It may have cost us a National Championship... but of course a few other details would of had to of happened.

The NCAA released its findings on May 25th, over a month after Capel was hired.

Yes but it was well known what would happen. OU had self reported and already imposed a substantial penalty. People are making it out to be a bigger deal than it was. OU made improper telephone calls. It was not some major scandal. OU did not count a call when the player answered and said "Coach I can't talk now, call me back". It was stupid but it was not some major violation like paying players. The reason it became a big deal is because Sampson apparently broke the rules again at Indiana. That had nothing to do with OU. Now had Sampson stayed at OU and done that it would have been huge.

Answer: OU would be competing or hiring their next coach at the same $2M to $2.3M range, which sends a message that OU's AD doesn't do BB on the cheap.

It didn't happen.

I totally agree! And when hired Capel was the youngest or second youngest D1 coach. I think that was his downfall in that he hadn't learned certain things in dealing with players. I don't think what happened last year with TMG and WW and TG would happen again with Jeff. He learned a valuable lesson with a steep price to pay. He'll be sucessful again.

Don't forget that not all the Capel years were bad...

Just the last couple of years things kind of fell apart.

Agreed... I think Capel will learn from this.

Unfortunately, his mistakes related to his mis-evaluation of character pertaining to recruits was too much to overcome.

His firing was justified, but I think he will end up bouncing back and being successful wherever he lands.

Right where we are now.No BIG TIME proven coach is going to leave a gig at a basketball school for OU.What big name do you think would have taken the job 5 years ago with us under Sampson probation?
