Will Lon Kruger be retained?

OU did not almost get the death penalty. OU lost some recruiting days and a scholarship. It was nothing and Kruger is quoted as saying the penalty wa great because it did not effect the guys st OU.

Considering we were repeat violators, yes, we realistically could have been given the death penalty. Luckily the NCAA decided not to follow their own bylaws because the phone call stuff wasn't that bad.

And yeah, that's Kruger for you. He doesn't make excuses. But to try and compare Capel and Kruger is laughable.

Didn't you hear, if we fire Kruger now, we'll be able to hire Coach K or Bill Self.....


No. The reality is, most who want Kruger gone have 0 replacements, like usual. And I'm sure they'll start naming off a ton of dudes who have never been to the final four or even Sweet 16 as guys who could do better than Kruger

I replied give him one more year. I like Lon and he is a good coach, but this is a results-oriented business....no matter how great of a guy you are. You can only live off your past results for so long before you have to evaluate the entirety of the situation and have an honest assessment of the current trajectory of the program.

As far as next year, I want to see him reverse this tailspin that we are in right now. We don't even necessarily need to make the Tournament next year....so long as we all see tangible results (i.e. players/overall team improving and everyone buying into his system as well as some semblance of defense/toughness, etc.).

I sincerely hope he is able to do that.

I don't want Lon to be replaced right now, but here are two younger guys that are having some sustained success:
T.J. Otzelberger - South Dakota State
Nick McDevitt - UNC-Asheville

Just for the record, in my opinion this is the worst season of OU basketball since the early 80s. I know some seasons have been worse in terms of wins and losses but going from number 4 to the bubble is a joke.

That's a ridiculous way to view this season. Kruger should be fired because AP voters had the team ranked too high 6 weeks ago?

To fire a guy who brought in a top 15 recruit and went from 10 wins or so to an NCAA tournament berth is insane. And the notion that Capel -- who committed or allowed NCAA violations, lost lots of games, and had to be chased out of Norman -- wasn't orders of magnitude worse than Kruger -- whose team has had a bad 6 weeks -- is even more insane.

I, for one, am glad that you aren't OU's AD.

Doubtless it'll have to be someone who played or coached at OU. Maybe Najera is available.

Just so I understand this, we want to fire a guy who will go to the tournament for 5 out of 7 years to replace him with a guy who has coached a total of 5 years, and would have gone once or twice to the tournament, at a school small school that's in a conference that ranks in the bottom 8 of the NCAA.

OU once lost to a non-scholarship team in Tubbs’ early years (might have been his first year). But that is more understandable in many ways than this season.

Who cares what we were ranked , the final season rankings are what matters ...that’s why he should be canned.

He finished second to last in the big 12 last season and we probably end up there this season as well .

Not to mention next season which will be worse than the two previous years .

You have arguably one the best players in the country on your team and you struggle to even make the tourney?

What has happened to ou basketball ? is this what we should come to expect from our program ? I’ll venture to say in a three year span we probably average 15 wins , and you think heads shouldn’t roll?

Since the departure of Henson and company we are a bad program .

Why keep Lon another year just so we fire him next season where we could finish LAST in the big 12 .

Think this season with shepherd running the show ....we wouldn’t even have double digit wins .

The more I think about it, the less pissed I'm getting I guess.

It probably was the mirage that was the first half of this season that has made us all so upset.

IF you just look at going from 11 wins and no post season to hopefully 18 wins, that would most of the time be a success.

The issue is that there is no improvement outside of adding trae young and he will be gone next year. I don't think the incoming recruits are difference makers. So next year will look like last year and the continuation of this second half of the season.

So why should Kruger get the benefit of the doubt when he is about to probably only have 40 wins in three seasons?

Based on this poll I believe a small minority of voters are keeping the board threads flowing. It gives the impression Lon is in trouble which does not help him or the program recruiting. They are not helping, if they really care call the AD and stop giving other schools ammunition for recruiting battles.

I think Lon is a much better coach than most of the coaches in the big XII but I would still have to consider firing him. OU can’t perform like this. It is his job to make sure it doesn’t happen. I don’t know why this opinion would offend anyone.

This is not simply a down season. His team seems to have quit on him
