BARTLESVILLE — Sand Springs committed too many turnovers, missed too many shots and was outrebounded too many times.
Class No. 2 Bartlesville beat No. 10 Sand Springs 53-42 Tuesday at Bruin Field House, and junior Jena’ Williams led all scorers with 26 points.
The Bruins led by as many as 15 points (45-30) in the fourth quarter, but the Sandites pulled within six after two free throws from junior Jacie Taber with less than a minute to play. Bartlesville ended with a 5-0 run.
“I’m actually encouraged,” said Sand Springs head coach Dustin Morrow. “For about two-thirds of the game we played how we were supposed to.”
Bartlesville (16-0) jumped out to an 8-1 lead to start the game and Sand Springs needed a spark. Holly Kersgieter took it upon herself to provide that spark. Trailing 15-5 early in the second quarter, the Sandites went on a 14-5 run, with Kersigieter scoring nine points.
Kersgieter stopped a 7-0 run and scored the next seven points for her team. Jacie Taber hit a layup off of a steal, and Kimi Presnell scored and was fouled, pulling the Sandites within one at halftime, 20-19.
Kersgieter ended with a team-high 19 points, and Isabella Regalado had 10.
Sandite junior Destiny Johnson never could find her rhythm and didn’t score a field goal until the 3:57 mark of the fourth quarter. She ended with five points.
A 21-8 third quarter gave Bartlesville a 41-27 lead going into the final quarter, but Sand Springs had some life left. The Sandites went on a 15-7 run to pull within six but they were forced to foul and Bartlesville hit its free throws.
“We just can’t have a lapse like that in the third quarter. We showed some toughness in the fourth quarter coming back and that’s been lacking at times… I believe in these kids and think we are going to get there,” Morrow said.
Bartlesville won the battle of the boards 23-18, and Sand Springs committed too many turnovers that resulted in Bruin points.
Sand Springs is the former No. 1-ranked team in Class 6A but has gone 2-5 in its past seven games, dropping nine spots.
