Starting to think that not redshirting Griffin was a huge mistake.

She is improving by leaps and bounds and no telling how good she would be in a couple years. Second, I don't see a replacement center on the roster for two years from now. All this being said, Sherri doesn't have a crystal ball anymore than we do.

It seems, unfortunately, to be a matter of record that women athletes rarely redshirt. It's common among men athletes in various sports, but not women.

I agree, too bad. Nicole shows signs of being a dominating force next year, her senior year.

This! The only players anywhere that I can think of that have redshirted did so because of injury or transfer.

I have never seen a freshman from any WBB team redshirted for developmental purposes.

Come to think of it, I can't off the top of my head think of any male BB freshmen redshirted for developmental purposes. Can anyone think of one?

Not a freshman - but Lon is redshirting DJ Bennett for developmental purposes. I think it will pay off too with Fitz and Roe leaving.

The big from Gonzaga (can't spell his name) was redshirted by Few as a freshman to develop.

I agree that it is rare though. Most kids don't want to do it...

I don't know why the women don't. It surely will help them as much if not more than the men. I sure widh we'd have done that with Abi a few years back.

Basketball isn't the beginning and end of life with most of the women. They will go to colllege and get on with life.

If we had redshirted Griffin, would she have developed?

We DON'T HAVE ENOUGH DEPTH!!!!!!!

If I lower case one letter will the site let me keep the rest in caps? I hope so, for the necessary added emphasis.

NO DEPTH HAVE WE

OUR DEPTH HATH DEPARTED

My Mom and Dad were in line at Ulta in Norman behind Abi Olajuwan late in her senior season. My Dad struck up a conversation with her telling her the normal enjoy watching you and the OU team. He said to her that he wished she would have redshirted her freshman year so she could play the following year...Abi said coach Coale talked to her about redshirting but Abi did not at all want to do that. She said maybe she should have redshirted but she was graduating and had accomplished what she wanted at OU.

I think women understand only in rare cases are they going to have a chance to play professionally and make serious money. Most are like normal students...they want to get their degree and move on to the professional part of their life. I know I was anxious to graduate and move on to my professional career when I was a senior.

Wish we could have had Brooklyn sit out an extra year cuz we need a post next season! Didn't Jaime Carey from UT play for like 6 years??

I would think that since BB is not exactly an end-all career thing with most women players, they would opt for a redshirt so that they could get in a 5th year of scholarship. On the other hand, with the plethora of ACL;s that occur in WBB, it's probably a good idea to have that extra year available just in case.

That's exactly what Sherri told me at the Fast Break golf tournament three years ago. Abi wanted to move on, and she said most of the girls, unless its an injury, they want to get their four years end, take that degree and move on with their lives. Most understand there is no money in basketball once they are done. My only argument is, why would you want to grow up so fast. Most kids that take the five year route, are already in grad school and it sure is a great way to add to their education. JMHO.

If you need an additional year for a five-year program, don't they usually provide scholarship funds in any case?

That's the way I've always looked at it. You get a year of grad school paid for...how nice is that! Plus, there is no way most freshman know whether they will be good enough to play in the WNBA. But, they might be if they sit out one year and use that year to train, get in great shape, and practice hard while adjusting to college life. It seems to me that just about every girl who has the ability to play past college does so which indicates the desire is there. They just need the talent which potentially could be improved with a redshirt year.

Personally, I would have loved the 5 year plan. But, I didn't have to get up at the crack of dawn to work out or spend hundreds of hours in the training room, various airports or hotels. Their college experience is much different than mine was or my daughter's was. Both of my daughters were ready to move on when they graduated. One of them has since said that she didn't realize how much she would miss college when she graduated. It's possible that many of the players will feel the same way. We do have the benefit of hindsight on this subject, which they don't have.

badger, that is so insightful.

lol

I do wish that Abi redshirted a year also, but I can understand wanting to be through with the pressure-filled sports machine. She probably had it especially difficult with her last name and being in the same sport as daddy.

as much as i enjoyed college time at OU, i wasn't about to go through another year or two for another degree. as you get toward the end, the senior capstone, the higher pressure exams, the grad requirements... it starts to add up. not every year can be filled with freshmen-level gateway classes :)

What about Kristina Higgins and Sune Agbuke? If they get well-conditioned, they'll be pretty good.

Griffin would not be any good if she was redshirted for 10 years. Why can't you people see this.
