#5 OU vs Ole Miss 6pm 1/8

Peyton is certainly off this year.....last year she handled the ball more and had lots of assists.
I don't get to watch the games so don't know how she is being used this year. Maybe some more plays need to be run through her??

It's her shot. It has been much flatter than usual. She has always had more of a line drive shot but it has been worse this year. I noticed she had a compression sleeve on her upper leg last game. I wonder if she is nursing a leg injury that is making it painful or difficult to get her usual shot off.

We could slip to 1 and done by tourney time. This was a pivotal year talent-wise and the upside doesn't look like it's there.

I’m not quite there yet. I think we can pretty easily make the sweet 16. That may be it though which would be very disappointing.

man JB takes a lot of flack from us but I think this is my favorite postgame presser I’ve seen of her. Brutally honest and calling out the team on their faults. She called out the lack of playing together. (I think a shot at Vann and Chavez). Not just the fans who can see the hero ball that overtakes our team at times.

I don’t understand why everyone is fine with Chavez taking 20+ shots a game. Of course she’s going to hit some of those. Anybody else would too. The offense is off because the coaches would rather have personal accolades than win. Why would we ever go away from Beers? People in the stands were screaming for them to stop chucking shots. It won’t win them games. There’s no flow to the offense. We do have a bench. They caused two shot clock violations with their defense. They never get the ball passed to them. Our rotations are just horrible. We need two of our best defenders out there constantly. Smith should start. It’s ok to run this offense and also have plays in your back pocket. It’s the SEC and every game will be this tough or harder. I will say I don’t think they make all those shots every game. They couldn’t miss.

My thoughts on tonight’s game. I hear you. My thoughts on Aaliyah taking so many shots a game I can care less only reason why because we know she is a natural scorer. Tonight in the first quarter against Ole Miss She was out of control a bit too much and Jennie should have called timeout immediately. I normally never point out fingers at players but tonight I most definitely am. Payton with two miss easy layups and was wide Open another time, and Aaliyah was trying to play hero ball and was playing out of control way to early in the game was wild to me idk. I could see that late in the 4th quarter but a couple mins into the first quarter? absolutely ridiculous..

I’ll be honest, I have not been pleased with Payton this season. She doesn’t even look to shoot anymore and when she does she misses badly or very short. There has been MULTIPLE games this season that she has been left wide open and could not knock down the shot.
Today she was left open at least 3 to 4 times behind the 3pt line and did not make it. Actually was off badly. Im disappointed overall with her this season so far, I honestly expected her to be scoring over 15+ Or more points a game this season and just have not. It doesn’t even irritate me anymore, its more disappointing at this point IMO. Like at this point start Keziah or Caya over Payton for a couple of games and make her realize she needs to start contributing or else she gonna get her spot taken. Have to think if Payton makes of of the 14 shots we win that game. I sure hope she gets going because its only going to get tougher here on out.

Raegan and Sahara played well tonight IMO. Zya didn’t play bad just was in foul trouble early on along with Sahara.

Caya and Keziah played well on defense tonight for us.

And oh the officiating was absolutely TERRIBLE.

Onto the next game, Boomer!

Against Mississippi State we had great ball movement and great player movement. Not so much tonight.
Too much one on one and forced shots. Lost our mid range jumbers. 8 blocked shots and several that should not have been tried.
Ole Miss is a good team. Texas only beat them by 3 and was lucky to win. They have shot treys at under 30% but tonight it was over 40%.
Verhulst 0-7 from behind the arc. Ouch. Only 5 bench points in 39 minuts. Our depth isn't there yet.

We only have 3 coming off the bench really. And the minutes are sporadic. There’s no time for them to contribute. Lofton came in with 1 minute left in the first quarter, got an immediate steal and bucket. Then you don’t see her again until far in the second for another couple of minutes…with no touches.

Agree with hating to call names. Always had the win together and lose together mentality. Peyton seems to be in her head. We never know what is going on outside of the game. I’m fine with Chavez taking all those shots when she’s hitting her teammates at the same time. I think that’s what we were missing tonight. I also think she carries a lot of outside pressure to prove herself. It’s not necessary, because she’s very talented. Easier said than done to let that go though. We’re on her their side and tough on them, so I can imagine the ones who aren’t are pretty brutal. I would love to see a couple of minutes with Vann, Smith, Lofton, Williams and Reagan. Or even Stewart and Reagan with the three. Just to shake up the other team with intense defense and length. Not asking to make changes to the start, but it could change a game with a couple minutes of real pressure.

Have noticed all season about the lack of playing together by the 2 players you mentioned. Have thought one is jealous of the other one. Beers, Verhulst, Williams, Stewart, and Culliton seem to be great team players. JMHO from watching most of the games this year.

i think when Peyton is off, that really just leaves us with Chavez. I get having bad shooting slumps, BUT Peyton with those underhand scoop layups is killing me! She isn't finishing them and idk how many she missed total but i counted something like 3 in the first couple quarters, and along with bad free throw shooting, that's the game. Everything else could have been better of course, so we've got a lot to improve on. Point is we have to be tougher, and Ole Miss exposed how soft we are and all other SEC teams have to do is watch that film. Hope we can pull it together asap otherwise we're going to go 0-3 these next 3 games. We have yet to beat a good team this year (nc state can be good but weren't at the time we played them), so we're unproven and overrated right now as far as I'm concerned.

I wouldn’t even call it jealousy. It’s competitive. One isn’t better than the other. And together, they’re very very very good. If you really pay attention, Vann can be having her best game and they take her out and leave Chavez in to up her in points. That has to be frustrating. Vann wants to play professional too and gets little recognition from the OU WBB page. That kind of stuff will make a player leave. Vann is an elite player. Nothing to be jealous about. They both need to use each other and get the recognition as potentially the best backcourt in the nation. Coaches can help that.

Here's what was tough about last nights game...we beat ourselves. That wasn't Ole Miss being a superior team...cause they are not and that will play out the rest of the season. This loss will hurt and I hope we can learn from it quickly.

When this team plays together on both ends of the floor they look awesome and unbeatable. When the effort is ramped up, the spacing is better and open shots come much easier and you can control the tempo of the game. Last night the girls did not get to their spots like normal. We were lazy on getting past the mid court for the passes up the floor and we rarely got to the corners so the defense was all muddled up inside.

When we play selfish and just try to "get ours" we really struggle. As BAD as we played as a team last night we still could have easily won. The two young guards are still growing and at times it will be painful. My biggest disappointment last night is in the upperclass...I expect more from them. In fairness, these girls were not used to a high volume shooter...but look at the top scorers in the country...they all shoot more than Aaliyah. Yes, Aaliyah needs to cut down on the bad shots. But the reality is that most of the night spacing was off and effort was horrible. I hate calling out kids too, but Payton is a 5th year and she now has several games where she just disappears. Honestly, it will be hard to win if she goes 1-14 in a game. Teams have stopped defending her because Zya is a bigger threat and a majority of her shots now are wide open. She NEEDS to be better and I feel the only way that happens is if this team heals and becomes more connected. If not, we will be middle of the road in the conference because we can't play well together.

Starters
  • Raegan played like a monster. She needed more touches and thats on the guards.
  • When Zya gets in foul trouble, it really hurts us defensively. We need her talent on the floor.
  • Payton may have had her worst game as a Sooner.
  • Aaliyah brought us back in the game, but she needs to look to run the offense if the shots not there.
  • Saraha needs to do the same. She struggles to finish, especially when the shots not there but there are players open on the perimeter she could pass too.
Bench
We have seen some great growth from the bench this season, but this game brought me back to the feelings I had after UCLA.
  • Caya has been uber confident since UCLA but last night she was hesitant.
  • Brooklyn was similar. This girls needs to smile and hustle on the floor and I think the physicality of this game hurt.
  • Keziah is very athletic, but when she was in she ran into every ball screen and gets out of place on both ends of the floor. When she understands how to grasp the O & D her minutes will grow. Until then, it will be hard to get on the floor in competitive games.
  • Beatrice needs to play well enough that they can't take her off the floor. When she "owns" her space she is dam good...but we need to see it more from her.
Outlook
This team needs to learn to play together and play with Aaliyah. I hope the players watch the press conference. Its starts with the coach and this is the first time i can remember that Jennie went directly at the players in a press conference. Then the upperclass needs to LEAD us together. That will help the younger players grow more quickly.

If this doesn't happen and we continue to play "me" basketball, we won't reach our full potential.

Seriously? I'm going to have to see some proof of that.
Tom4OU, Not sure if you watched the games over the years...it has never been about stats. Usually JBs teams play the fewest minutes per game than any starting 5 in the conference. We just don't have a ton of depth this year. sheesh.

Excellent comment by Reagan and Jennie. I've always wished that they provided a mic for the people asking questions. At one point, I think she was responding to a question about Peyton, but that's just a guess because the question was unintelligible due to the poor audio quality.
