After watching our search for a coach drag along I can't help but think keeping Capel at least one more season would've been the best thing we could've done.

And not necessarily because we knew Capel was the right guy for the job. It's clear many candidates have been scared away by our possible NCAA issues.

With that said why not keep Capel, let him recruit and use the next year to get a ruling from the NCAA. If it had been bad, we had just cause to fire Capel without a buyout and would've been able to go through the hiring process without a black cloud over the program. And, he would've brought some more talent into the program that would have been at the dispense of the next coach. As it is the new coach will have almost no chance to bring in anyone this class.

Who knows, maybe Capel would have been successful and the NCAA issues would be relatively light. Either way, I think we made a knee-jerk reaction.

Wrong.

The right options were/are available to OU.

Billy Gillespie was on the market. Buzz Williams is a good fit. Johnny Jones is right down the road. Tad Boyle is a good coach at an awful basketball school. Terry Evans is there.

The right people are around to change the program. It will be a failure of the administration if it doesnt happen. Regardless, letting Capel go was the right call given the coaching pool that should be available to OU.

I supported Capel, but what is done is done... Whoever we get, Mid-major, High-major Asst, D2 Coach, or A retired guy from Depew.

Lets get these guys that are already on board, maybe steal a recruit or find a decent player to help next year. And get to work this summer and make the best out of what has happened.

Honestly, hindsight tells me we probably should have kept Capel until the NCAA smoke blew over. It sounds like this is scaring potential coaches away because nobody knows what is going to happen, but everybody knows the NCAA loves to hammer OU whenever possible (see Kelvin's phone calls).

As I've stated many times before, Capel would not have been successful so that extra year would be another year of signing borderline big 12 talent and another uber-bad season with even less fan support. This would have made our program become even worse than it is now but at least the NCAA deal would be done and we could move forward.

The pool is there, but we're hamstrung by the NCAA issues. Wait a year, let them be resolved, and then go from there.

Just bc someone is on the market, doesnt mean they want to come. BCG I liked but has some baggage, Buzz reportedly doesnt want to come, Dont know much about JJones, and Tad Boyle doesnt want to come, Terry evans is a d2 coach with a good record....

I think this is a knee jerk reaction to the lack of credible information about the search, patience is a virtue.

Nooooo. I think we'll make a good hire, but it won't be the kind of hire we could've made under better circumstances. That's the point, we'll get a good coach, we could've gotten a great coach if we had waited.

I am a big Capel fan, but he had to go. Things just got out of kilter here and Joe had to hit the reset button for OU and for coach Capel.

who's to say they will be resolved this year? It took the NCAA 5 years to resolve reggie bush, we have had 1 and a half

I think in the long run we will consider Joe to have had considerable restraint in keeping Capel around as long as he did.

It will be resolved by this time next year.

We hope, we don't know for sure. And even if it is, the only person still here from that debacle is Joe C. Easier to resolve something on OU's end when all offending parties are gone.

There's a good chance we would be worse off with Capel staying another year. There was very little reason to keep Capel. If we had some recruits coming in, maybe there's a good reason. But really we don't even have any good recruits coming in.

And Bomargate at OU, Tattoogate at tOSU and Cam Newton at Auburn all took considerably less than 5 years. The only thing I can figure is that people (Tiny, Coach O and the financial advisor) are not cooperating with the NCAA and they aren't giving up.

Bomargate we cooperated fully, If Tiny, Coach O, and now that hes gone Capel, wont cooperate then it wont go away.

If the money was given to Tiny before he enrolled at OU I don't see how it's any different than what went on with Perry Jones. It's not an OU issue.

Of course it all hinges upon the involvement of Coach O.

It may not turn out the way we want but I have never seen so much worrying about something that nobody knows what is happening.

You just have to ask yourself, who has taken another job that was high on our list. Clearly we didn't want Billy G. or we would have hired him.

Bigger concern now for OU is fan support given the success of the Thunder. OUBball fans were few and far between for some time now... Thunder entertainment is tough to compete with and many will opt for a few Thunder games instead of a season of OU games. Sad reality.
