After watching our search for a coach drag along I can't help but think keeping Capel at least one more season would've been the best thing we could've done.
And not necessarily because we knew Capel was the right guy for the job. It's clear many candidates have been scared away by our possible NCAA issues.
With that said why not keep Capel, let him recruit and use the next year to get a ruling from the NCAA. If it had been bad, we had just cause to fire Capel without a buyout and would've been able to go through the hiring process without a black cloud over the program. And, he would've brought some more talent into the program that would have been at the dispense of the next coach. As it is the new coach will have almost no chance to bring in anyone this class.
Who knows, maybe Capel would have been successful and the NCAA issues would be relatively light. Either way, I think we made a knee-jerk reaction.
