Recently, Penn State announced that they were considering terminating its men's basketball program due to poor performance and attendance. Going to decide after next year.

Question for the Board: Who would be in favor of just terminating the men's program until a new gym is built and the 1Oklahoma basketball NIL account is big enough to be competitive. Then, hire a new staff and start the program over. With the portal and NIL, you wouldn't be too far behind as you could buy a ready made team in a year's time. The women could choose to keep playing in the Lloyd Noble or go to the fieldhouse.

You could then role all of the money saved into football until it is up to speed. Then, maybe turn your big money donors towards a new gym and Bball NIL.

Or, do you prefer our current course of just being as good as we can be with a poor gym and bottom of SEC NIL. Just take what you get until you get lucky with a massive money donor that loves basketball. Doing it this way, Porter has at least been able to scrap together bottom level portal guys and put together 3 winning seasons and 1 NCAA tourney in 4 years. Unlikely, we can keep him if a job comes along with better NIL support but you just hire the best guy you can find that will operate under our situation and again, just have him do the best he can with what he is given.

i prefer firing pm next season if he doesn't make the tournament. fire joe c. too.
then hire a new coach and see what happens.
continue playing in the lnc....nothing seriously wrong with it.
the fan support problem is much more serious.

Even with all the issues currently, men's bball is making money. Why would we get rid of it? I'm not sure this was totally thought through...

First of all, no, not under any circumstances. We may not be "successful" as we want, but we are competitive. Made the tourney, and most of all, the program is still profitable.

Second, and most of all, you do realize that article about Penn State came out on April 1st... it was an April's Fool Day joke.

I found one random guy talking about this. Nothing else. This isnt happening.

The sad thing is, if this gets suggested on the football boards, the responses will be a whole lot different than this board. There is actually a fan on OUInsider who does not even view basketball as a SPORT. Penn State aside, I'm guessing CowboySooner remembers that OU once briefly cancelled their women's basketball program 30-35 years back...thankfully that didn't last long.

Negative

Apparently, I got caught by an April Fool's post. When you think about it, there is no way a power 4 school could drop a major men's sport due to TV contracts. SEC wouldn't allow it.

So, on with the second option.
