ABQ "basketball writer" ranks Butler, not OU

He's a tool. Has been for years. Not the first time nor the last he'll do something like this.

I'm OK with it because I'm not concerned with any ranking as of December 1st. The only 2-loss team on his ballot was Michigan State. Maybe if they take care of business and win the next 6 non-conference games before the start of league games, I'll start caring about the rankings.

I actually don't blame the guy for not ranking a 4-2 team.

Fair enough, but how many other teams have played as tough a schedule as OU?

Very few.

If the Sooners were undefeated after beating six patsies, he'd likely have us ranked.

True, we would likely be ranked if we were 6-0. The trouble with being upset with Butler being ranked ahead of us, is Creighton would be upset if we were ranked because they only have one loss and they beat us. If Creighton was ranked instead of Butler and OU, then Mississippi has an argument because they beat Creighton..... It goes on and on.

Butler actually has an argument that they should be ranked ahead of #12 North Carolina because they beat NC convincingly. They also beat a "name" school in Georgetown. Their other 3 wins were all by more than 20 points each. I think Butler ought to be ranked somewhere in the top 25.

Really I just don't think any of it matters now. It's like a debate contest; you can make a good argument for a lot of teams to be ranked.

I blame the guy because if you're given a vote then you should actually know something about the current state of college basketball. This guy is either clueless or has a personal agenda.

We agree that it doesn't matter now, but I otherwise don't buy your reasoning. Creighton is not to OU as OU is to Butler, because OU and Butler have both played much tougher schedules schedules than Creighton, so for my money, OU and Butler are much more equivalent teams.

But my post wasn't about OU being ranked above or below Butler; it was about the writer in New Mexico who didn't have OU in his top 25. He's clearly not factoring schedule strength into his decisions.

Not worried about rankings till the end of confidence play.

Here's a little tidbit:

We spent exactly ONE week ranked inside the top 20 last season. Yet our NCAA seeding was a #5, indicating the committee believed us to be one of the top 20 teams in America.

The committee follows the game. The pollsters, both media and coaches, often do not. Their rankings simply do not matter.

Thank you.

Coaches and the media spend about a total of 15 minutes filling out their rankings. Most of the time the coach doesn't even do it, it's the SID.

Exactly! The rankings are meaningless this time of the year. They mean more to fans than to what happens in post season play. I

spend all of about 30 seconds looking at the rankings, but where OU is ranked right now doesn't bother me at all. I would rather see us ranked at the end of the season, because that can have an effect on seeding.

UPDATE: he had OU at no. 13 on his ballot this week. Guess he saw the right part of the OU-Mizzou game, which even impressed my niece (an OU soph who's a pretty big sports fan, but hasn't been to that many basketball games due to a part-time job). She said, "I didn't think we were supposed to be THAT good," (after a big play, I think by TaShawn Thomas).

they matter for a couple of reasons ... 1st being ranked gets your highlights on sportscenter .. this is huge for the feel of the program .. future recruiting and even fan excitement ..

2nd being in the score crawl on sportscenter/ being in the newspaper top 25 grid .... again these things engage fans

so no rankings don't "matter" as far as getting in the dance ... but they do matter to the program
