Now, he has since recanted that statement after last season, but this year he has waivered in whether he thinks Capel can do with the OU program what other coaches could do.
Seems like he knows as much as the average fan

I think it was correct of Joe C to allow them out of their LOIs....the only thing I don't agree with is that OU didn't put a stipulation that they couldn't sign with a Big 12 program
Not sure if I'm the only one, but the post-season streak always felt a bit shallow because there were quite a few NIT performances in there....sure it was a nice stat, but it isn't like Zona's current NCAA tourney stat (the one that will probably be snapped this year with KU replacing Zona for the nation's longest)
That's kind of the way I feel. It's been a tough season, and a frustrating one, but we are still one season removed from an EE appearance.
He was more then you'd think. He turned down a Big 12 program before accepting OU.
iowa state?
there were not quite a few. There were 4 NIT trips. It was a major accomplishment, something no one else could match.
Why would a program like Oklahoma need to hire an up and comer like.....Bob Stoops and Barry Switzer? Rethink your argument.
4 NITs > a few...but if you want to start a semantics argument, then you can go ahead and claim victory.
"something no one else could match"....what?
Zona has 25 straight NCAA tourney berths.
Good chance KU's would be longer if not for the NCAA sanctions
The reason it was a record is no one else could match it at the time. If it was continuing, meaning OU had squeaked into the NIT in Capel's first season, it would still be the longest streak, notwithstanding Arizona's steak of NCAA appearance. It was a nice accomplishment for the program.
I don't understand why you or anyone that claims to be an OU fan would down play it. That seems similar to saying OU's Big XII football championships don't really matter because OU did not win the national title game. They are still a big accomplishment for the program.
It was a nice accomplishment but there were 5 NITs in that span. It was also mostly talked about by OU fans.
LOL at "claims to be an OU fan"....I'm an alumnus of the school and didn't miss a single home basketball game when I attended. And have been to many out of town games, including NCAA tourney games.
And your analogy doesn't work, sorry, it was actually quite bad.
I can't see Turgeon turning us down only to accept a position with Texas A&M. Plus I can't see Castiglione getting turned down, making offers that can't be refused and all.
I can't either.
I was thinking maybe he felt after having a great year in '06 that he could get a better job than OU, and then after his down year in '07 he thought that perhaps he shouldn't be waiting for the "grand offer" anymore. That or perhaps he believed OU could be in more trouble with the NCAA then he'd want to deal with. Not sure.
yeah, i think it was much more about returning to wsu after each particular year than it was about a&m vs ou.

Actually, I heard a fairly well known TV announcer on the radio a few years back and they were talking about Turgeon. This guy is a friend of Turgeon's and he said Turgeon did turn down OU because he felt like if he took the OU job, he would never have a chance to coach at KU.
Evidently, according to this announcer, OU is considered a rival of KU, not near as big of a rival as MU or KSU, but it sounded like OU was the next school in line as a rival of KU. A big enough rival that the coach of one could never be the coach of the other.
The announcer said this is exactly what Turgeon told him. Otherwise, he'd have taken the job.
i've heard that story. it's retarded. not saying you're wrong, just that if that was a significant part of turgeon's thought process, he's a retard.
the thing is i really think coach capel is a very good college basketball coach. Coach Sampson never had the "McDonalds All-Americans" that Coach Capel has gotten, And done more with the talent that he had IMO . I am not gonna lie, i was very upset when Sampson left for Indiana, do you think he would come back to OU? I really hate to say it, but i wished he would. I never will forget the 2002 season. That was mym favorite season, I remember the 1988 season but I was only 9 years old.
