Anyone else not happy with Neal getting 0 minutes?

... Tyler will be a good player for OU, right now he is just too soft. ... Tyler needs to be more agressive and act like he isn't just content with being on the floor. He has the tools to be good, he just has to come out more aggressive.

Soft ... needs to be more aggressive ... Some of the guys that do get to play also have these traits.

There must be more to the story.

I think the problem is that there are problems or flaws with everyone on the roster and Jeff is having a hard time figuring out who to play and who gives him the best chance to win.

He has gone to a four guard offense and he has to play Fitz. So, it might just be that he doesn't want a 2nd post or interior player at the moment. I'm ok with that.

Like BrettRomar said above, I think he will be a good player in time and certainly "playing time" is a universally used tool by coaches to motivate and teach. Whether he plays or not this year, I bet he is much better next year. This year will teach him how hard he needs to work in the off season.

Capel's substitutions patterns are crazy puzzling.
Every game they are different.

OU has gone to a 4 guard lineup...Means less playing time
OU has shorten their rotation...less playing time.
Neal is not strong enough to guard a post player and not quick enough to guard a SF...less playing time.
Neal gave up just as many points or even more then he had when he was out there...less playing time.
Even though the fans have given up on this season..but not the players or the coach..less playing time.
Neal is not a good or decent player right now....what he is, is a player with a lot of potential...Which means right now...less playing time.

I like Neal, I see a great future for him at OU. But right now its the present and Capel is not going to give up on this team and he is going to play the players that are going to give him the best chance to win right now.

As much as I am down on Capel, I don't feel qualified to say he is making a bad decision on Neal. Capel watches practices and darn well better know who should play and who shouldn't play. I personally think his mistakes in playing time relate to discipline and demanding more work ethic in practice than picking the 5-7 best guys to play.

Please do not put Larry Bird and Tyler neal in the same post.

Tyler will be a good player for OU, right now he is just too soft. He was in slow motion the games I saw him and wouldn't compete for a loose ball. I think Capel was trying to motivate some ofthe other guys when he started Neal. Now he has gone back to teh other guys to see what they can do. If they don't produce in the next few, expect to see Tyler some more.

Tyler needs to be more agressive and act like he isn't just content with being on the floor. He has the tools to be good, he just has to come out more aggressive.

he didnt. he said Larry Bord.. two totally different people.

and my issue with Neal is his lack of effort all around. since he got to start he kinda seem like he settled. he must be showing that same effort in practice.

Newell is a walking turn-over, but he hasnt played much ball and hasnt played much point to understandable now that i know those facts. :) which means he should be coming in for either pledger or cade and not blair.

to me it seems like besides fitz, cam, cade, cj, and blair. everyone else on the team plays with no passion, no heart, almost like they quit b/c they lost a few games or didnt get to start any more. its frustrating to watch..

and even more frustrating to see a guy clap everytime he makes a shot, like he just done something spectacular..

and the most frustrating is that our biggest person is 6-8 and when the shot goes up, whether on O or D, no one crashes the boards. heck we should be sending 4 guys everytime especially on the defensive boards..

This is part of being a good coach. You give the upperclassmen a chance to prove they can't play early in the season. After the break, you go with the younger ones if they can't.

That is just my opinion. Personally I just don't think Neal is ready right now. He is too passive and looks like he is afraid someone might touch him out there.

If OU was kicking butt with this shorter rotation I could understand. But basically we stink. Play all the young guys. Find out who can play. Get guys better. Play for the future. Setting Neal and Calvin makes no sense.

-this. neal hasnt had the opportunity to do better really... put him in there & see what happens.. whats it going to hurt right?
also-- why is there no tyler neal icon for me to insert but amhed is there?! gay!

I am not upset when a player does not get to play. I am upset that a player plays well enuff to start 2 games and then never sees the court again. Is someone else much better on this team? I think not. Newell turns the ball over after sitting forever and gets yanked quickly. Your starter struggles to and does not get the hook. I have no idea what coach is thinking in his patterns. He reminds me of high school coaches who have "no idea" either.

What is with the high school coaches who have "no idea" statement? There are a ton of high school coaches who do a great job and know a LOT about basketball. A lot of them get the best out of what they have without the ability to 'recruit' certain skill sets or recruit over guys they already have. There are probably more college guys with less real coaching experience than many high school guys.

Quite frankly, Capel probably gets the best he is going to get with what he has available. Part of that is his own fault because, in my opinion, he has put too much emphasis on the 'big fish' recruits the last three years and missed out on some GOOD players that could have and maybe WOULD have gone to OU, ala Roberson and Uzoh, etc. If he spent more time on guys he has a fighting chance for and less time on guys who probably aren't coming to OU then we probably wouldn't be in the mess we are in. Add in the fact that we recruited several 'big timers' with the attitude that they were ENTITLED to everything instead of having to WORK for anything and then you get stuck with a group of high level underacheivers.......I would MUCH rather have a group full of HARD working guys who might have a LITTLE less talent than a bunch of underacheiving prima donnas.

I have more problems with an offense that doesn't seem to have any direction. It looks like we play street ball most of the time. I'd like to see some sets and some designed plays to actually get the ball to the guys you WANT to touch it most of the time....and I thought we actually had that problem even when we had Blake. Just my meaningless opinion.

Its called practice. Capel watches these kids every day in practice. And you think b/c you saw him makes some shots....and you overlook the fact that he played horrible defense...that he should be the starter.

If Capel does what you want and starts playing for the future right now....They should fire him immediatly. Any coach that plays for the future before you even make it to conference play should get fired.

Neal can play for the future when the future gets here.

Did you have this opinion last year... because the freshman last year played horrible defense and they kept playing all year. And with a bad attitude to boot.
