OWASSO — It was frigid outside Tuesday night, so the Bartlesville girls decided to warm things up in the Owasso gym.
Erin Shoemaker’s second and third 3-pointers triggered a torrid third-quarter shooting surge as the 6A No. 2 Bruins rallied for a 46-38 win over the No. 3 Rams in a battle of Frontier Conference title contenders.
Jenà Williams and Avery Allen also made 3-pointers as the Bruins hit their first four shots from behind the arc in the second half.
Trailing 28-23 at halftime, the Bruins outscored the Rams 18-3 in the third quarter and eventually scored 20 straight points, leading to a 46-31 advantage early in the fourth quarter.
It seemed like they couldn’t miss, but defense was on their minds, Shoemaker said.
“When we’re able to make stops, we control the game,” she said. “We knew they were athletic and we had to come out strong. We started guarding and our shots started falling.”
The opposite was true for the Rams, who were 12-for-22 in the first half when Mya Bhinhar scored 12 of her 14 points, but went only 1-for-12 in the third quarter and made only two second-half field goals.
“We rushed too many shots. We weren’t sharing the basketball,” Owasso coach Matt Sweeney said. “We couldn’t run the break because they were playing so well, and I guess we thought we had to shoot the ball fast when we got it.”
When the Bruins did miss, Sweeney said, “they got the offensive rebound and scored anyway.”
Senior 6-foot-2 Destiny Harris had 10 rebounds to go with eight points. She also blocked two shots and discouraged the Rams from driving inside.
“Destiny was so big for us tonight, blocking shots and altering shots,” Bartlesville coach Krista Binam said. “She does so many things that don’t show up in the box score.”
Junior guard Trinity Parker did not score, but she made up for it with nine rebounds.
Bartlesville improved to 12-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference while breaking Owasso’s eight-game winning streak. The Rams, winners of the Tournament of Champions and Skiatook Invitational, fell to 9-3 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Binam was proud of her team’s balance. Williams is the Bruins’ leading scorer and often carries them offensively. This time, Owasso’s feisty Rylie Boone held Williams to three first-half points, but her teammates helped weather the storm.
Shoemaker hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. Allen and Williams (adding seven in the third quarter) finished with 10 each.
“We’ve known that somebody was gonna try and take Jená out of the game and (Owasso) did a good job of that, but our other girls know what to do when that happens,” Binam said.
