AGENDA ITEM 14
ISSUE: SALE AND ADVERTISING OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AT
ATHLETICS FACILITIES AND EVENTS – NC
ACTION PROPOSED:
President Gallogly recommends the Board of Regents:
I. Authorize the sale and advertising of alcoholic beverages at athletics events and
facilities with the appropriate modifications of Regents’ Policy 6.2.1 and Section
5.18.1 (C) and (E) of the Faculty Handbook for the Norman campus referred to in
Regents’ Policy 3.4.2 to permit such action; and
II. Authorize the President and Athletics Director, with the assistance of the General
Counsel, to develop and implement specific plans and procedures at specific
facilities and events to include terms and conditions customary and reasonable for
plans of this type.

normally I would object - but if it puts butts in the seats.

I can't imagine anyone going to a game because they can buy an expensive beer -- or rather, staying away because they can't.

I think it's a bad idea, but I seriously doubt they're looking for fan feedback -- especially from fans who live nearly 1,500 miles away.

I agree!

Great idea! Most fans won't over indulge. I would rather have one or two overpriced beers while watching the game instead of one or two overpriced waters or pop.

This is a fantastic idea, and long overdue. I legitimately cannot believe there are people arguing that individuals shouldn't be allowed to purchase a beer at a sporting event. Luckily we've got a smart guy running the ship these days, who knows this is something that should have happened decades ago.

Come to think of it, you can get alcohol at TU basketball games. I had a beer from a local Tulsa brewery while at a TU game last season.

Exactly, it adds the options for those who want it. I haven't raced off and bought wine at Walmart, but someday I might and at least we have the opportunity to do so.

I won't buy a beer for every game, but one or two before Texas or Aggy wouldn't suck

It will increase income and to a very small extent increase attendance. Occasionally a double date or social group may consider going. Also if you have more "fun" you may go more often.

And if you have less fun because some drunken clown spills his beer down your back or behaves badly in front of your kids, you may go less often.

Kids who spill a full 32oz soda and scream the whole time are just as annoying. If those reasons stop you from attending a game, you're just looking for excuses.

Those guys are getting loaded up before the game and probably sneaking it in already. Not necessarily beer but the flask in your coat pocket or boot.

Similarly, if the lack of beer keeps you from attending...

I enjoy an adult beverage as much as the next guy. One of the things I hated about having seats in the club of Owen Field, the beer drinkers climbing over me many times a game to go relieve themselves. hahahaha. :facepalm

I am not a fan of it but these rules are not written to please me. The younger people like being rowdy and making a spectacle while I prefer to be more low key and watch the game. Thats why I watch the games at home. They can booze it up all they want - I hope it's a big draw. If they drive in OK county afterward I might be representing them in court. If so I will be polite.

It was, and still is, much easier to get drunk before the game. This isn't going to bring all the alcoholics out of the woodwork as some of these Chicken Littles claim.

Basketball games aren't football games. People dont' drink in the parking lot for 5 hours before the game starts, which means you aren't going to have a bunch of people who are already drunk entering the game.

An OU game lasts 2 hours, and they will probably cut service with 10 minutes of game time left (they don't sell alcohol in the 4th quarter of pro events, would assume that's how it will work for college).

Someone do the math and explain to me how people are going to get drunk by standing in line, buying two bud lights at a time, and walking back to their seats in 90 minutes. Because that's not how it's going to work.
