The Albuquerque "stop" on the Sooner Caravan was last night at a local country club. Mark Cline was the original men's basketball assistant scheduled to come, but they announced that Betts was coming earlier in the week.
Fortunately, he seemed to be glad to be back in Albuquerque. He talked about how good last season was and told about what an excellent kid Blake Griffin is, in addition to being the best player in the country. He said that Blake's decision to come back was the "best choice for him."
He also told about how the other seniors will be missed, and that OU does have some good players coming back. Of course, he said the best news was that Willie Warren joined the group of returnees.
Betts also recapped the recruiting class and pointed out that OU did have two players in the McDonald's All-American game. He also told about a few of the upcoming opponents for the '09-10 non-conference schedule - most notably Gonzaga (up in Washington) and Arizona in the Big 12 / Pac-10 challenge.
He did have to field the annual, "Why doesn't OU play UNM home-and-home?" question (from the same guy as last year). Betts was pretty diplomatic about it (I felt like telling about how lousy some of their fans behaved - although it was mainly directed at the refs; and how Tubbs got some media cheap-shots that clearly offended him). I asked about the most satisfying wins, and he mentioned the home win over Texas (because we hadn't beaten them since Capel arrived) and both regular season wins over OSU.
