Ben Howland's take on UCLA's season

I couldn't care less about the programs at ucla or nc. What bothers me is the lack of heart and hussle from the players who were available to play this year.
It appears to me only a few gave it their all. Capel said the summer didn't have the dedication that was needed. Yea, WW was injured but I don't expect to lose to the 3 worst teams in the conference ever.

8-8 is the minimum conference record that we should expect.

can some one tell me how it is capel's fault that our best player was sick a large part of the year and then last 9 games of the year (a third of our season)

It's definitely not his fault that Willie got sick. But does missing WW for 1/3 of games justify this abortion of a season? It's not all Capel's fault, IMO. But I think the comparisons of our season to that of UNC, UCONN, etc. are a little silly. UNC won a NC last year(via stomping OU in the E8).

It's like another poster said. the coaches for UCLA and UNC have proven track records, and have delivered championships. Capel has not(yet). But there's a reason nobody at UNC is calling for Williams' head. He's a winner, they know it.

BTW, this team has problems far beyond Willie Warren's injury/sickness.

If he is the best of the best, then why did they have a bad year (they have lost 10 of their last 14 ballgames)? Shouldn't a coach with his experience and success be able to prevent this kind of a year? Did the coach not recruit the right kind of character kids? Was there not enough discipline? Did he recruit too many McDonald's All-Americans and not enough basketball players? Did the coach just not know what he was doing?

You are just confirming what I said earlier that what happened at OU can happen at any school to any coach. It's funny that some blame all of the problems at OU on Capel but don't seem to think the EXACT same issues at UCLA or NC are significant.
