Big 12 Hoops Tourney staying in KC through 2016

I thought everyone was really impressed with the job OKC did with both the men's and women's tourneys. What has KC got besides bitter cold?

Pretty weird to give all that revenue to a state that has no conference team in it

PLUS you have a location that is more centrally located to the teams and has been just as successful as KC. Boggles my mind!!!

Hey, they gotta take care of KU. Lawrence is not really big enough to host the tourney, so KC will have to do.

kansas needs something if they're going to keep pimping KC as a Big 12 town.

Missouri's happy to take your money, though.

KC has been and will always be Big 12 country since Kansas is the only area team that's ever won anything. The Big 12 is operating from such a position of strength no telling what they have in store for this tournament but you can bet they have something up their sleeve.

Can't have it both ways.

If you want to claim KC as Big 12 country, you can't whine when KC gets the Big 12 tournament (not that you were in this thread, but plenty have made both claims before).

There are definitely a lot of kansas fans in KC. But you're kidding yourself if you think the Mizzou presence isn't there, as well. And not only is it there, but it's growing. It's a split community. Historically it's been a Big 12 city, but only because every local team was a Big 12 program.

I have always been on record that the Big XII basketball tournament should be held in "Kansas" City. It's the hoops capital of the conference due to the religious Jayhawk following.

The Big XII is all about OU and Texas football and Kansas basketball. The rest have always been schedule fillers.

Big-12 Press Release from 11/23/2011

Following the 2011-12 season the men's and women's basketball championships will become stand alone events, taking place in separate cities. The men's championship is under contract, and will continue in Kansas City through 2014 (UPDATE: In KC through 2016).

Starting in 2013 the women's championship will be held in Dallas at the American Airlines Center, with Oklahoma City playing host in 2014 at the Chesapeake Energy Center. With the change, the women's basketball championship will take place the Friday-Monday preceding the men's championship, which will continue its Wednesday-Saturday format.

"Our woman's basketball coaches and student-athletes will have the opportunity to showcase the sport's premiere Conference championship in state-of-the-art arenas that our home to NBA teams," said interim commissioner Chuck Neinas. "I would like to thank the Kansas City Sports Commission for accommodating our desire to separate the men's and women's basketball championships. Kansas City continues to be a valuable partner of the Big 12."

The 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship returns to Dallas for the first time since 2006. In 2003, 2004 and 2006 the Championship took place at Reunion Arena. The American Airlines Center and Big 12 Conference hosted the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Regional, which was second in overall attendance for both sessions with 21,030 spectators, including 11,508 at the final between Baylor and Texas A&M. The AAC is home to the 2011 NBA champion Dallas Mavericks.

Oklahoma City will host the women's basketball championship for the first time in Chesapeake Energy Arena after the 2007 and 2009 Championships were played in Cox Convention Center. The Big 12 and Oklahoma City served as hosts of the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Regionals in what is now Chesapeake Energy Arena. Both years the Oklahoma City Regional registered the best attendance among the four regional sites for both single session and combined attendance. The facility serves as home to the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder.

I can't understand the reasoning behind giving Dallas the women's championships again but if it can't be in OKC, Dallas is the next best location for me.

Whether we like it or not, Texas teams (e.g., Baylor) are also in the conference. :)

It is understandable that their fans would occasionally like a shorter drive to see their girls play in the Big-12 Tournament.

From everything I've read, the support of the women's tournament by Dallas area residents was very poor when the tournament was there before. It will be good for me. I can stay with relatives, drive to a Dart station and save on gas.

In 2014, OKC will get another chance to "support" the Big-12 WBB Tournament. I hope the support is very strong, as I really enjoy it in OKC.
