Bird at the point

capel said on the radio today that we don't have the athletes to play like mizzou does

OU doesnt have the talent, athletes, or depth to play like that. Im starting to think OU needs to take the air out of the ball and try to keep the scores as low as possible.

OU doesn't have the coaching, either. And I don't mean that as a shot at Capel.

Mike Anderson's been completely immersed in his style for thirty years. It's not the sort of thing you just decide to do one day. A hell of a lot more goes into it than just pressing full court vs. playing half court defense. Most players just aren't wired to do it effectively for 40 minutes, which is a big reason why it can be successful (it's not like other teams don't have athletes or ball handlers... but as much as most players THINK they want to play fast, they really don't. Not all game long).

OU probably only has three or four guys Mike Anderson would take at this point. That doesn't mean the rest are bad players (a couple he wouldn't want were still good enough to beat Mizzou last year), but your roster really isn't suited for the fastest 40 minutes style.

I had thought about this, and I don't think it's a bad idea (although I may well be the only person on this board that loves 52-50 basketball games :) ). The one obvious downside I see is that we're pretty much screwed if we have an off night shooting, as we usually won't have the size to outrebound the other team.

Until he starts hitting threes at a prodigious rate he is Pledger. Or Steven. Even Steve.

But he ain't Bird.

I'm patiently waiting for the day that you drop the Bird nickname in your recap, 04. That will be a happy day for all. ;)

I think they should have a different starting five every game and switch all the positions between players. I mean, we'll lose every game, but it will make for more threads where we can make a list of positions and players over...and over...and over...

Some people might not like it, but i think it is the right choice...

Remember we has a PG that didnt penetrate very often in AJ and now we would take him back in an instant...

Bird will be a guy that can score some from that position, but also has experience which might be more important...and it looked to me like he is being more aggressive with the ball than last year so even though he might not be able to get by every defender, he doesnt seem to settle on the 3 as much as i thought he would....

I'm less worried about how he handles the offensive responsibilities as i worry about him defending opposing PG's...that is where the Bird PG move could fail...

And this may just be a temporary fix until Capel feels the other PG's are ready for this level...obviously Bird is ideal for the SG spot, but the more experience he has at PG the better this team will be because we could potentially have 2 guys that are capable of running the point in the game at the same time down the road...
