Brittney Griner - The Punch

Now, exactly why did she throw an elbow into Joanna's face while running downcourt a year earlier, and why wasn't that punished.

Saving face is a bigger deal than confronting reality.

I think both incidents were the same year.

I remember when Courtney Paris was playing, and she was constantly shoving and elbowing people around in the paint her entire career. I do not remember too many OU fans complaining about that.

Seriously? Using your elbows and your body to get position is what great players have to do when they are CONSTANTLY double and triple teamed. Which is what Courtney put up with for 4 years. There is no comparison to throwing a punch. She kept her cool and accepted it and still was a 4 yr all-american.

There is a lot of difference in shoving to get position and what Griner did to Joanna. They had been pushing on each other, but it had not really been intense. While running down the court after a score, side-by-side, neither player involved in any attempt to gain position or anything, Griner suddenly threw an elbow into the face of Joanna.

1. It was deliberate.
2. There was zero provocation.
3. It was totally a blindside since Joanna wasn't even looking over at Griner. She was simply trotting down court.
4. Joanna went down like she had been hit with a hammer.
5. Repeat number one. It was deliberate.

Mulkey said she didn't see it. Well, the TV replay saw it. The fans saw it. At the very least, Kim did see it on the game films. Neither she nor Griner admitted that it had happened.

That incident was actually worse than the Barncastle incident. In the Barncastle incident, there was actually some shoving, and it was in the immediate heat of play. In the incident with Joanna, it was well after anything might have happened. It might as well have occurred during a time out. It was Griner demonstrating an attitude.

More importantly, it was Kim's attitude that she was demonstrating. Like Budke, who refused to "see" Riley's punch, it demonstrated her attitude towards such activity. If the Barncastle incident merited a two-game suspension (two months is more like it), the elbow to Joanna should have been a ten-game suspension. The fact that Kim did nothing says all you need to know about why Baylor is the only school that seems to punch, pull hair, and constantly get into fights.

Griner was a kid. She needed to learn.

There is ZERO excuse for Kim. She should be kicked out of amateur sports.

And you saw all of those games?

Careful with what you say, TC. My dad has almost all those games recorded - and the fact is, one of Courtney's strengths is that she seldom pushed or shoved - and virtually never elbowed anyone. You don't get double-doubles in game after game if you sit on the bench too much for foul trouble. Plus she had too much class to act like a Baylor .... well you get the idea.

I just went back and watched the Griner childish, brutal, shot at Joanna as they crossed half court that day. About as dirty as I have ever seen. A foul was called, but she should have been ejected and held out for several weeks.

Brittney never got full control of herself on (or perhaps off) the court. She was even ejected (by the officials of course - certainly not by Mulkey) at least once as a junior - for leaving the bench to engage in a fight - if I recall correctly.

It makes no sense to defend a bully. Talk about her size, her ability to score, etc. But don't defend her out of control behavior which was displayed far too often. My mom used to say "You never lose your temper. You just display it." Brittney's mom needed to teach her daughter that same lesson.

Yes, and if we are talking about the incident at Norman that year, Britney did not elbow Joanna, she couldn't have because she was behind her. What she did was reach forward and grab her and pull her back. Everyone else was pretty much down the court and the refs did not see it so there was no call. I don't consider that a bad offense, but I wished at the time that she would have gotten a foul. It seems like it was a close game and maybe we won? I don't know and am not going to look it up. I am pretty sure I was at that game.

ESPN should do a 30 for 30.

"What if I told you that a one-game suspension is sometimes not enough?"

womensports above seems to have a faulty memory in regard to the blatant Griner elbow. It was infamous!

Sweetest OU Girl, do you suppose that you could create a Youtube video clip of the elbowing incident? I'd like to see it again.

Since the description of the play doesn't match the location of any of the parties, I can only assume that she/he is addressing another play, distinct from the one on which they stopped to show the replay.

As you noted Sybarite, it would seem these are two separate incidents. I would love to see a tape of the one which others are speaking of here.

As mentioned in Sybarite's post, it appears we are speaking of two separate events. I would love to see a clip of the incident. I have googled it after it was mentioned here and could not find it, so thought it must have been referring to the same incident to which I was referring.

Thanks if you have the time to put up a clip.

In the Deadspin article, Griner said if she had to do it all over, she would pick Baylor again.
