Brock Cunningham OV today

LOL he looks so young in this pic.

I forgot... Do we want this guy?

I sure do.

I was also told our coaches are really high on this kid. He lives in Austin and his father is a former football player at UT. So, one would think he might accept his offer from the Longhorns. That is, until you learn two important things I was told about this recruiting battle with UT. His mother and father are divorced, and his mother loves Lon Kruger and OU. I'm betting she is with him on this visit, so nothing would please me more than to see them leave Norman with an OU commitment in tow.

Cunningham is said to be an extremely high motor player who loves to play defense. He goes after every rebound and loose ball with a vengeance. As you will see in these videos, he also has some solid skills on offense. His offer list is pretty solid too:

Looks to be a good overall prospect.

Glad you agree with me, Abe! That's not a bad first post for someone who has been here almost since the board was launched nine years ago next fall.

Where you been hiding out all this time? ;)

You need to post more often!

you DO make him sound like an attractive prospect ada!! I like hearing kids have busy motors. That means right off the chances are high that they'll be a positive influence. cool beans.

If you missed what Seth Greenberg said on Twitter at the Adidas Camp camp about this kid, scroll down a ways on the first link I posted. Said he "never takes a play off" and called him a "winner."

As you know, players who give great effort can make up for a lack of talent to some extent. Judging by what I have seen, read and heard about Brock Cunningham, he has the skills to go with his high motor.

Been here the whole time. Just like the characteristics that Kruger wants in these kids and attracts to the program. Defense, 2nd sense on rebounding are hard to teach since it tied to desire and hard work ethics. 🏀

My question wasn't meant to be negative at all, it was a real question. Know absolutely nothing about him. Well, hopefully he commits to the good guys!

I knew that, Stikboy. Hope my response to your question didn't come across as condescending.

I really want this kid! As Seth Greenberg said in his tweet, he's a "winner." You can never get enough high-energy, dedicated players who set an example by "bringing it" on every possession.

Ada I know, I'm with ya. We just have guys on this board that watch guys and give honest appraisals, and I just didn't know if he'd been given the thumbs up for OU level. A question I do have, though, is do we not have a freshman and new signee that play his position?(Freeman/Manek). How many stretch 4s do we need? Matter of fact, Doolittle too?

Freeman is a much different player, in size as well as style. Manek is taller, but he's also more of a finesses player than Cunningham. You could point to some similarities with Doolittle, I suppose, but they're still not the same in many respects.

Bottom line, there are only five positions on the floor, so you bring in the best players available and let them compete for playing time. WTSooner is correct when he says the college game is not the same as it used to be. A power forward in the "good ole' days" may be a stretch four now. A small forward may have to swing to the four if he wants to get more playing time. I could go on, but you get the idea.

Positions don't really matter all that much anymore. You put your best five out there and adjust along the way to match what the competition forces you to do. My point is that college players today have to be more versatile than ever before. Those who aren't or can't adjust to fill a need usually see a lot of bench time, or they transfer to another school after the season is over. Dante Buford is a prime example. I was a huge Dante fan even before he arrived on campus. But, he was a tweener who struggled to find his niche on the team when his perimeter shot wasn't falling.

I sure do.

His dad was a big dude. I remember him.

I love it when a player takes real pride in his defense and plays hard all of the time.
I watched his video again. He is 6 6" - 7" 205# and does not currently look like a B12 Forward.
He must be good, but he does not look comparable to K Doolittle.

FWIW - his dad was a good high school big man in the Texas Panhandle (Sanford-Fritsch). Ed went about 6-9, 275 in high school. He destroyed the smallish team from my old hometown in rural eastern New Mexico in a game I saw in Fritsch back in December of '84. Of course, it didn't hurt that the guys guarding him went about 6-1, tops.

Wow. Ed Cunningham is his dad? Yeah, he was a big dude. I'll never forget him getting James Goode kicked out of the OU-Texas game in either 89 or 90. For some reason, Cunningham and the other UT OLs were having a great time shoving their hands inside the OU DLs facemasks and Goode finally had enough. He grabbed Cunningham by the facemask and pulled his head all the way to the ground. Ed Cunningham messed with the wrong dude, Goode was freakishly strong. Although mission accomplished on getting him thrown out. Still can't believe how crooked some of the refs used to be in that game...

"High Motor" is music to my ears. Just love players that play hard and fast.
