Capel deserves a second chance >>> Ft. Worth Star-Telegram

Opposite. I'm ambivalent as to whether Stoops stays or goes but he has certainly not proven that he is anything more than Phil Fulmer in a weaker conference.

:ez-roll:

followed by LSU busting off a 70 yard run right up the middle on the first play in the Superdome

Absolutely pitiful coaching performance that a team gets a huge play. Down right pathetic. What a terrible coach.

Clown post.

The article really laid it out without passion or prejudice. The article won't convince evryone that is for sure. However, unlike the local rehash of the obvious articles written by Rhode and Trammel, this one actually had some thought and solid reasoning behind it.

Interesting observation about Crocker. I always considered him one of the "good guys". However, it ain't quite so good if you do not want to undertake the new tougher conditioning program - it is a failure of leadership. And, WW was only a sophmore - albeit a very talented sophmore, he was not a senior like Crocker.

One parting shot. Why did Jeff Capel let the players get away with not doing what they needed to do? Flame away.......

If we split with Capel now, we PROBABLY lose our recruiting class like we did with Sampson, which is shaping up to be a pretty descent class: CAM and TJ are considered by many to be among the best prospects both in the region and nationally, Neal was the POY in the state, and Washington was a 1st JUCO AA.

We still have a few scholarships to give, and I feel pretty good about our chances in picking up some good prospects. In addition to losing guys that are coming in next year, we also will likely lose Richard Peters for the 2011 class and any momentum we may have on other kids that are high on OU for the 2011 class. This is a bigger deal than you think...go back and look at when Clark and Taylor comitted to OU (April and September of last year).

Now, I think that everybody understands that next year is going to probably below .500 BUT you have to take into account the future in the decisions you make now. Capel is absolutely going to be the Coach next season, it may be tough, but by 2012, he has a pretty solid foundation "as is":

Washington JCAA (Sr.)
Pledger**** (Jr.)
Fitz.**** (Jr.)
Cam**** (So.)
TJ**** (So.)
NEAL OPOY (So.)
Peters**** (Fr.)

If you bring in a new guy, it is likely that not ONE of these players will be playing for OU by 2012 except for maybe Neal and Washington. This is the reason why I think that some of the more thoughtful posters are saying that it needs to be NCAA or bust for Capel in 2012. The program has a better chance of retaining these guys if the move is made in 2012 than it does in 2010. JMHO, and another reason (not set out in the article) that you should keep Jeff.

One other thing, I'm not about to make my decision on firing a guy based on some 18 and 19 year olds flaking out. I'll add that I have been extremely disappointed to hear that Crocker was part of the problem in the off-season, as I thought he was a great young man [still do, but dissappointed if what is being reported is true]. Gallon and TMG were guys that flaked, and I think Jeff has learned a lesson.
Great post.

Coach Capel sold his soul to WW. It is difficult to discipline "buddies". Crock was not and never has been a problem. Good programs do not let individuals operate under a different set of rules. Capel allowed WW to do just that. It does not matter how many "journalists" from different regions writes it. I guess all of Sampson's teams were not conditioned tough? There is a reason why there was a change in strength and conditioning coaches. Darby was not willing to put up with the players crap and sweep it under the table. Say what you want about Kelvin, he wouldn't either. The head coach has to be the backbone of the program. The buck stops there. As an OU fan, I hope it changes. Just don't know if it will under Capel.

Not sure what Kelvin has to do with anything? Can you elaborate?

The article insinuated that Darby was let go so the team could get tougher with a new strength/conditioning coach. He was Sampson's s/c and also the s/c on Capel's staff that went to the Elite Eight. I guess I am having a hard time swallowing the fact that lack of toughness was an issue. YoYo uses a lot of the same ideas that Darby used. Lack of discipline is the issue.

I'm with you. This is the first I've read about Crocker being part of the problem, and I hope the guy has his facts wrong.

It's been discussed here numerous times during the season Crock bucked the new workout regimen. See, post count doesn't equal board knowledge!

Crocker had a baby during the season and during pre season conditioning was going to Dr's appointments with his girl. I don't really think that's being a problem, he was in shape.

I don't buy the Darby being let go to get tougher arguement either, there was something more there between the 2. Darby had no problem in getting the team to be tough.

I think Darby's problems starter when he got kick out of the game against, who Baylor

Last time I saw Darby he was helping coach Sam Houston State vs Baylor in the NCAA tourney. With everything that's happened I would think he's ok about his split with OU, whatever the real reason was.

Darby is at Louisiana-Lafayette coaching basketball. He still has strong ties to the players he worked with at OU. Darby is a stand up guy that does a great job, no matter what the job is. He was not afraid to stand up to the "superstars" at OU. Could have used that this year.

100% agree
