Choctaw again took the hard way to the Class 6A state tournament, but it’s still back to defend last season’s state championship.

The Yellowjackets, ranked No. 6, topped conference rival Midwest City, for a third time this season. This time, it was a 58-49 victory in a Class 6A area tournament consolation championship.

“I’m proud to represent Choctaw and have a chance to defend our title,” Choctaw coach Ryan Maloney said. “It’s one of the most talented tournaments I have ever seen, and it will be a battle.”

Choctaw star Bailey Golden was huge, scoring 25 points. The future Oklahoma State high jumper scored 12 points in the second quarter to put the Yellowjackets ahead for good.

Midwest City had led 12-9 after one quarter.

“Bailey and Jordan (Saxton) played likes seniors that were not ready to go home,” Maloney said.

Choctaw also lost in the area championship last season, but still went on to the win the state title.
