curious as to what kind of impact or role that you guys expect out of him this season. Coach Capel rarely says much about him (good or bad). I know that he has a great knack for snaring rebounds, but this isn't the JUCO level, and his height is going to put him at an even bigger disadvantage. I think he is going to play a lot of minutes this year but I am not sure how much I actually expect him to produce.

Hopefully he can be like Ernie Abercrombie and prove me wrong.

Capel said that he will be the "ultimate role player" for a depleted OU front court. Murray State was looking at him and ORU was recruiting him, and he was shocked (per a rivals story) that OU called him, but they did and he jumped on it.

I kinda got caught up in his juco numbers at first, but I am hoping for 5 points and 3-4 rebounds per game out of him in a backup role.

I will be pretty pleased with 5 and 4, especially if he can at least hold his own at the defensive end and set good screens.

Ya, it may be a little ambitious though. Ryan Wright was quite a bit bigger, stronger, and more athletic and averaged 4 and 4 last year.

Im hoping CJ is more skilled.

Hopefully he can at least catch the ball in traffic. Ryan left so many bucket opportunities on the table. Ryan's on-the-court awareness left a lot to be desired as well.

There were a lot of guys bigger and stronger than Dennis Rodman, but Rodman was a better rebounder. Rebounding is about effort, timing and coordination. Wright lacked some of that. By all reports, Washington has the knack.

I dont expect him to start, except when Fitz or Thompson is injured or being punished. But I do expect Washington to play some big minutes just because his rebounding will be needed as we have little quality experienced depth inside.

I will say this. When Coach Capel doesn't talk about you much, that means he doesn't think too much about your game. That's never a good thing. If you're good and you're on his team, he will think about ways he can use you and tell reporters about your potential. Out of mouth generally means out of mind, AKA lube up your shorts cuz blisters are in your forecast. Hopefully CJ will come up big this year though, remember this is October and every season is a marathon.

Good post. No question that the kid has the desire to be a great rebounder. You don't average 13 boards per game at any level without that desire (especially at his size). Hope it carries over.

No way that CJ is Rodman, but you don't just luck into averaging that number of boards over an extended period of time without having some innate talent for doing so OR an extreme motor.

I think that CJ could be a nice "hybrid-PF" for us when we go up against the numerous teams that utilize those types of players. My question is how his feet are and whether he has the ability to defend the drive.

Agree with some of the above. Rebounding is a talent just like shooting or passing. Some guys know how to read a ball in the air and put themselves in proper box out position and able to go up and get it regardless of their height, because they have their man on their butt.

I think best case scenario is someone like PJ Tucker from UT. He was 6'5, relatively athletic, but an amazing rebounder. I think CJ is a little taller, probably less athletic, but they are both FAR less athletic to Rodman, which is why I think he was a bad comparison. Tucker was a great college player with put backs off offensive boards and incredible at boxing out on his own end. I think he is the perfect college comparison to what CJ could be since he knows how to properly rebound and doesn't rely on athleticism.

Could see that to an extent, but PJ played a 3-4 hybrid and saw time at the wing depending on UT's line up each year. Washington is not sniffing the 3 spot.

I doubt he plays much. We just needed some bodies and some decent human beings.
