Fort Gibson overcomes tie to outlast Elgin

BETHANY — In one fluid motion, Zoe Shieldnight broke her team’s scoring drought in the third quarter by draining a 3-pointer. Seconds later, she intercepted a pass on defense, thus firmly swinging momentum in Fort Gibson’s favor in the Tigers’ 49-43 4A semifinal win against Elgin.

Shieldnight’s play catalyzed the Tigers in the second half, sending No. 1 Fort Gibson to the state title game.

“That’s what she’s done all year for us,” Fort Gibson coach Chuck London said. “She’s one of our leading scorers. She’s our leading rebounder. She’s one of our leaders. ... That’s what Zoe does and that’s what she provides for our team.

“That was a gigantic shot. It got us back on track and spurred us through the end.”

In the fourth quarter, Shieldnight, who already signed with Southern Nazarene, hit a bucket under the basket when the Tigers needed it most.

Elgin whittled the seven-point lead down to just two when Shieldnight hit the shot to push the Tigers ahead by two possessions with 3:10 remaining.

She hit four free throws in the final 1:41, including a pair with 57.8 seconds to play.

Elgin got off to a torrid start, paced by Izzy Cummins’ opening 3-pointer.

The Owls quickly built a lead, but Fort Gibson’s Kayci Glover pulled her team back in it with back-to-back buckets, including a 3-pointer to take a two-point lead.

But Elgin managed to pull ahead to end the quarter with a triple from Cummins.

Fort Gibson opened the second quarter with a 10-3 run to find a little separation. But Elgin ended with a 4-0 spurt from Gabby Cummins, including a last-second free throw when she was fouled trying to hang on to a Fort Gibson turnover with 0.8 of a second left.

Fort Gibson built a seven-point lead in the third quarter, but Elgin surged again in the fourth using full-court pressure to frustrate Fort Gibson. With 1:13 remaining, Elgin’s Paige Pendley tied it up, 41-41, on two foul shots.

Five Fort Gibson free throws in the final minute sealed the win.

Harrah squeezes past Muldrow for championship game berth

BETHANY — With a 62-50 win against Muldrow, the defending 4A state champions are back in the title game — but it didn’t come without a fight.

Up by 16 points at the end of the third quarter thanks to a 15-0 run, Harrah saw its lead whittled away by Muldrow when guard Erika Ankney, who led Harrah with 19 points, sat for two minutes with an ankle injury.

In her absence, Muldrow cut the lead in half with an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter.

Once Ankney checked back in with just under five minutes to play, Harrah regained control and stretched a two-possession game back to a double-digit lead. Guard Hannah Boyett and forward Taylen Collins scored 16 of Muldrow’s 18 fourth-quarter points. Collins finished with a team-high 18 points, while Boyett had 12.

The stands at Southern Nazarene began to empty with 30 seconds left as Harrah sunk eight free throws to put the game out of reach.

Scoring only six points in the opening quarter, the Panthers shook off their slow start with a 21-point second quarter behind big contributions from Ankney and Ali Brzozowski.

A block by Brozozowski led to a transition layup by Ankney just before halftime, giving the Panthers a three-point lead. Both Brozozowski and Ankney scored eight points in the first half, but the two combined for 14 of Harrah’s 21 second-quarter points.

Then, in the third quarter, guard Katie King keyed another 21-point quarter with nine points.

With 5.8 seconds left in the third, Ankney streaked down the court for a nearly uncontested transition layup. She landed awkwardly and clutched her right ankle on the court.

She was helped off and didn’t reappear until two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter.

By the time Ankney came back, Brzozowski picked up her fifth foul.
Kiara Lovings added 12 for Harrah while King finished with 19.
