Best way to do it and its the right time.

I think we can safely rule out any of his former assistants as a successor. The new hire will likely be someone outside the Duke family. I don’t think they’ll follow North Carolina’s blueprint, but we shall see.

My favorite story about Coach K where it pertains to OU is that after UNLV demolished Duke in the 1990 title game, Coach K knew his team had to become more battle-tested in out-of-conference play if he was going to bring home Duke’s first title. His way of going about that was to schedule a game in Norman, OK against a school which had not lost a home game in three years, and had only lost two in the prior seven years. Well, they ended our streak, and took home their first title that spring. It’s good to know a coaching legend had so much respect for the OU men’s basketball program.

man, i was just thinking about this the other day. snyder has to be option 1, 2, and 3. which sucks because I have grown to really like him. he's done a great job at utah. if i am a duke fan, i have no confidence in anyone else.

edit: guess i should have read past the first graph. scheyer, feels like the matt doherty version of duke. recruiting about to dip.

Coach K was hired at Duke the same year Tubbs was hired by Oklahoma

I believe Valvano was hired at NC State that same year as well. Jim Beoheim was close, but think he arrived a year later (not sure).

Yeah, I guess they went with one of his current assistants before he crashes and burns at another school.

Coach K is like Bill Belichick in that they are both legends, but are better "do-ers" than "teachers" because their assistants are just not that good when heading up other team / programs.

Beohiem has been there since 1976. Basically during Dave Bliss's 2nd year at OU.

Lon Kruger's first year in coaching was 1982 to give you an idea how long these guys have been coaching.

Technically correct. It's a current assistant.

The spirit of my prediction was still wrong...thought they would go outside the Duke family. I couldn't come up with one former assistant who I thought would have a snowball's chance at that job. The best of them is probably the guy another poster mentioned, Quin Snyder. He's had very good success at the NBA level after moderate success at Missouri (he did take a #12 seed to the Elite Eight). Still, Duke can do better than that.

UGH...I'm not usually that far off :-(.

I'm baffled by UNC's hire of Hubert Davis. You would think they would be able to hire just about anyone they want. Same with Duke really but I think Duke may prove to be a lot more difficult job without Coach K. But we'll see.

Side note - That OU/Duke was the only game I've seen in the LNC. I grew up in TX, and have never lived close enough do drive up for a game. I think that game was over the Christmas break and we were in OK visiting my grandparents. You can blame me for stopping the streak...

not sure why that was baffling? long time ast coach at UNC long NBA career .. had all the support of the current and former players ...

I woulda thought they would go with a more experienced coach type hire. Like getting a Moser type like we got seemed like a fit for them. But even someone like a Rick Barnes seems in their wheelhouse. Last time they hired a former player with limited head coaching experienced didn't really go well with Matt Doherty.

they were for sure not going outside the UNC "family"

the other choice they were looking at was Wes Miller UNC Greensboro

I am really surprised at the amount of messaging on this thread for a ou hoops site.

Why? OU hoops fans can't be general college basketball fans as well? Coach K is one of the best ever. It's pretty notable that he is retiring soon.

I think Coach K wanted to be able to do what Bob successfully did, and I don't think Duke had the courage to tell him no. They certainly could have had a safer bet, but I do have a very high opinion of Scheyer. If it doesn't work out, they'll ditch him in 3 years and be able to hire anybody they want.

I enjoyed his book...Coaching from the Heart...or by the heart..something like that. lol, it's been awhile since I have read it.
