+1 Leaders are generally born not made.

But maybe not leaders until they realize that it's time for them to step up. The Dales story is a good example.

Sometimes a peer can have a bigger effect on her teammates than any coach.

Leaders set a good example to the rest of the team. First one at practice, last one to leave, hardest worker, etc. If yoy do not do things such as this, and just try to lead verbally it will not work.
