According to a ruling by the National Labor Relations Board in favor of Northwestern athletes.

The timing of this is ironic since Bobby Knight was blaming the NCAA for "raping" college basketball. College athletics has been taking advantage of athletes as their lifeblood for decades.

The gig might be up.

Scholarships are not taxable but this ruling would suggest that they are being compensated for services. That is taxable. These kids can't have it both ways. If they want to be employees they need to pay tax on the value of their scholarship.

Hey Bounce,

Just because boca posts something does not make it trolling. This is a legitimate news story in the world of sports that could have a big impact on the game as we know it. Boca's point of view and stance on this is no different than a lot of other peoples, mine included.

With that being said, the definition of a troll in this context according to urban dictionary is:

One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument

Now, who is the troll here? The guy posting a legitimate story and stating a sound, valid, and logical opinion or the guy who ignores the post in its entirety and tries to derail the thread by attacking the original poster?

and stating a sound, valid, and logical opinion

That is your opinion. MOST folks don't agree with that at all.

And when you use the language and presentation that boca used, THAT is why he was trolling.

I think it is pretty clear to everyone that boca is a troll and probably a sock account for a mod. Just about every one of his opinions is contrary to the majority of the board and he starts threads that are a complete 180 from the known popular opinion. especially on the nba forum

While boca is usually a troll, I think he is being sincere in this post. The NCAA armature model is complete BS and the players finally started to fight back on it and are winning cases. The courts so far have agreed with the Athletes. Look at the NCAA sports video game franchise ruling.

Sigh. It's going to be a long offseason.

Ya know, I might be inclined to believe that he is a sock account for a mod except that a few years ago I was accused (not sure if it was by you or not) of the exact same thing on this forum.

Lot's of people have contrary opinions. This board has a few hundred members and we are surprised that someone here has a viewpoint that differs from the masses?

how is it complete BS? If they want to make money go petition the NFL to allow kids straight out of HS or start up a D league. Don't turn college football into a D league. This is all this will do. How anyone can think this is good for college sports is beyond me

No, it's when 99% of a person's viewpoint is different from the masses

I posted the story on the women's board. While you never know what a court will do, it hasn't been that many years ago that the courts decided that professional athletes were entitled to be free agents, something that transformed the world of professional sports. This could prove very interesting since unions don't have the same powers in all states. It makes me wonder if recruits might eventually be swayed by whether the school is unionized or not. This could be interesting.

Interesting is one way to put it. I would say devastating to college sports.

There is an NFL players union that all players are a part of whether you are in a union state or not

The Thunder have zero post play.
Capel took OU to the Elite 8, went 4-2 in the NCAA tournament and had a 30 win team.
The NLRB ruled athletes are employees and entitled to collectively bargain.
Scott Drew has 2 Elite 8s, a sweet 16, an NIT Championship, an NIT runner up and 3 Big XII tournament runner ups.
Lon Kruger is 0-5 in the post season at OU.
Bounce has boca envy.

These are simply facts. If 99% of people on this board disagree with those factual items 99% of the people on this board are imbeciles.

The Thunder have zero post play.
This is factually incorrect

Capel took OU to the Elite 8, went 4-2 in the NCAA tournament and had a 30 win team.
Doesn't tell the whole story. Three of those wins were from one season with Blake Griffin.

T
he NLRB ruled athletes are employees and entitled to collectively bargain.
It will get overturned

How many championships?

Lon Kruger is 0-5 in the post season at OU.
Just getting started

Bounce has boca envy.
simply waiting on those golf photos...

I do think that the present courts will overturn the NLRB ruling---for now. Eventually, probably fifteen to twenty years in the future, I am almost certain that some ruling will define that university athletes are employees of the institution and entitled to the benefits of the institutions---such as workman's compensation. Attempting to keep this under institutional control is about as likely as the NCAA trying to keep control of TV rights in the fifties and sixties.

Well, actually, it wasn't "THE" NLRB. A single individual, a director at one regional office, made this ruling. Even with that, the ruling is only applicable to Private Schools like Northwestern. It has nothing to do with Public Universities.

The ruling is subject to appeal to the NLRB in DC. Then if needed, on to the courts.

Powerful moneyed interest want to keep the status quo. Message board posters and a couple of non descript journalist are the only advocates for the players.

The players may get a couple of extra handfuls of money one of these days. But, there will be no union and no revenue sharing.

Okay, I confess. My name is bocabull and I'm guilty of driving the other mods crazy by stirring the pot every chance I get. I even banned myself so astute members like you wouldn't learn my true identity. :ez-laugh:

Geeeeeez! :facepalm Did you come up with that on your own?

Boca is actually the second shooter on the grassy knoll.
