College coaches in corruption scheme

Many basketball coaches are enablers; they know they need talent to win, so they tell their assistant coaches to go out and get that talent. They also leave the strongest hints that they are not to know the specifics in recruiting these star players.

I was listening to a radio interview with Pete Thamel and I couldn't believe what I heard - he basically said that a lot of coaches were nervous as hell because of what transpired (obviously) but that they also supposedly didn't know there was anything wrong with the arrangements that were occurring between the shoe companies/agents/players. That it was "business as usual".

If any sport needs a professional developmental league more then anything it's the NBA. Just ridiculous all around.

Lon Kruger addresses FBI investigation into corrupt NCAA recruiting

“There’s a feeling of who’s not doing it by the rules. And yet, coaches don’t have proof, the NCAA doesn’t have proof. That’s why they can’t do what they’ve wanted to do, probably,” Kruger said. “They FBI could, apparently, but they’ve got a different hammer than the NCAA.”

. . . . .

“Things are happening and changes are going to be made,” Kruger said. “Hopefully everybody comes out of it better for it.”

It doesn't speak well for the compliance departments at their various schools. But, as one person said to me with regards to Texas compliance, "Their job isn't to make sure Texas follows the rules. Their job is to make sure Texas doesn't get caught."

It's a whole new ballgame when it is not the NCAA knocking at your door

This is serious stuff.

“This goes a lot deeper in college basketball than four corrupt assistant coaches,” said a source who has been briefed on the details of the case. “When this all comes out, Hall of Fame coaches should be scared, lottery picks won’t be eligible to play and almost half of the 16 teams the NCAA showed on its initial NCAA tournament show this weekend should worry about their appearance being vacated.”

In terms of NCAA rules, multiple sources told Yahoo Sports that the material obtained in the feds’ college hoops corruption case threatens the fundamental structure of the sport. (AP)

So how bad could be it? In terms of NCAA rules, multiple sources told Yahoo Sports that the material obtained threatens the fundamental structure and integrity of the sport, as there’s potentially as many 50 college basketball programs that could end up compromised in some way.

I dearly hope OU is in no way tainted, but such selfish concerns aside, I welcome these revelations and the ensuing shakeup. I love college sports, but they have gotten way too big and too money-driven. I don't know if the evil genie can be captured and put back in the bottle, but I hope so. All I ask is that no favorites are played, that every program that deserves to be exposed and punished is fairly and appropriately sanctioned.

I agree with you. It's time to clean it up.

When they say lottery picks, are they just talking about current "potential" picks or is it meaning NBA players? Maybe both? This is the FBI investigating, not the NCAA. Could be federal laws broken and possible penalties associated with said laws.

There are some valid criticisms of Lon, but one thing that is for damn sure is he does things on the up and up. He recruits high character kids, and he doesn't play the Street Agent/Bag man game.

This. A lot of complaints recently about Kruger but, after Sampson & Capel, this more than anything is why he was hired.

Yup. I'm terrified at the thought of the NCAA digging into our Capel years, but not in the slightest about Kruger's.

Capel would have been the top of the list lol

Are you implying when Capel replaces Coach K at Duke that the Blue Devils will be exposed to his Capel's not so straight recruiting actions? Coach K is 71 so the switch is not too distant into the future.

KU has nothing to fear. If the Jayhawks can come through the series of scandals unscathed that stunk up that program last year, chances are good this investigation will be no more than a minor annoyance.

AND this year...it's ridiculous.

I'm don't believe anything will happen until AFTER March Madness this year, got to keep the cash cow going.

It will be interesting if it does, I was going to do a bracket challenge for a fundraiser for our baseball team...lol.

I'm not so sure Capel gets that job handed to him, first off
