Sherri expects a lot from her guards. Some have mentioned Peyton but she isn't the only one who is struggling. In conference play, this is how the starting guards compare. I did not include Gioya as she is new to the lineup.

Minutes per game:

Peyton- 30.4
Derica- 27.4
Gabbi- 24.9
Maddie- 23.7

I would say that even though Peyton is not shooting well, Sherri still has confidence in her as she is playing more minutes than any starter.

FG%

Derica- 44%
Gabbi- 35%
Peyton- 34%
Maddie- 27%

Derica is the only one shooting an acceptable percentage.

3pt %

Derica- 42%
Gabbi- 33%
Peyton- 22%
Maddie- 13%

Speaks for itself.

FT %

Gabbi- 88%
Maddie- 79%
Derica- 75%
Peyton- 72%

Pretty good.

Rebounds Per Game

Maddie- 5
Derica- 3.6
Peyton- 2.4
Gabbi- 2.3

Assists

Maddie- 15
Peyton- 15
Gabbi- 15
Derica- 12

Turnovers

Maddie- 16
Gabbi- 13
Derica- 13
Peyton- 12

Steals

Maddie- 13
Peyton- 9
Derica- 8
Gabbi- 6

Points Per Game

Peyton- 10.0
Derica- 8.9
Gabbi- 7.6
Maddie- 7.6

Not good.

Peyton is too valuable a player in other respects to bench because she is in a slump.

Actually, Derica's numbers look very good.

FG%: 44% = Excellent

3Pt%: 42% = Excellent

FT%: 75% = Excellent

Assists a bit low, but probably a result of where she gets positioned on the floor.

There is an old adage that you only go as far as your guards take you. We may run into that this year. We thought we had the best guards in the Big Twelve. Thus far, they haven't performed as expected in conference play.

But, let's look at our losses:

3-15 11 (4-6 10)
4-9 13 (3-9 8)
5-14 11 (1-2 2)
2-3 5 (1-3 2)
6-10 13 (9-11 23)

Total
20-51 53 (18-31 45)

These are the shooting percentages and points of our two posts in our losses. Notice that Kay Kay has not shot well in our losses, except for the Texas loss. So, we break down as much inside as outside when we lose.

Indeed, we have had wins due to the outstanding play of Peyton, or Maddie, or T'Ona in a particular game.

With the guard play this bad, I would like to see Sherri start using a fullcourt or at least a 1/2 court press. We need to be able to exert more pressure to disrupt the opponents and perhaps get some turnovers and easy baskets.

The real weakness in our guard play is atrocious 3 pt shooting. At this point we are in last place.

...........................Games Made Att ......Pct
10.Oklahoma............ 7.....42 .. 153 ... 0.275

If you leave off 3 pointers, we are hitting 64% of our shots - obviously excellent. I do not understand why we keep on wasting so many possessions this way. Any thoughts?

That's why they say, "live by the three, die by the three."

I agree that when outside shots aren't falling, we need to work for midrange jump shots if we aren't able to get the ball to a post.

Coming into this season, from three point range:

Maddie 43.3
Gabbi 33.3
Derica 32.5
Peyton 34.4
Gioya 33.6

Keep shooting. The shots will fall.

That was coming into season. They are all well below that now. Peyton and probably Maddie need some bench time to clear their heads.

So Gabbi is consistent with her 3pt FG% from last year = not great but decent.

Derica has improved a lot = fantastic

Basically, if Maddie and Peyton were shooting even close to their career averages, we'd be pretty good as a team from 3! And we'd likely have 1-2 more wins under our belt. They'll come around. I don't think they should be benched because they're too valuable in other aspects.

Hopefully Gioya can at least match her career %.

Great points, TM…and I believe you're correct with every point you made. To compete in this conference, you better have your best players on the court as much as possible.

We all know Peyton can shoot treys; we've seen how effective she can be when she's not slumping. I, too, believe she'll come around and I'm hopeful Maddie will also. Even if neither does, what other guards on our roster should replace them?

There are none although, depending on our opponent, McKenna can replace Maddie somewhat in scoring and rebounding. Peyton had 16 points Saturday by doing lots of other things on the court. She's really too valuable to be sitting on bench for being in a 3 pt slump. She can do many other positive things on the court. I think she'll begin to start hitting the 3s more consistently soon!

It appears to me our 3 pt problems have occurred because of the way teams are defending us. They position around the 3 point line and we do not show the skill or confidence to back up 3 steps and hit 3's from around there. But with so many defenders spread around the 3 pt line, driving is hard because it is too crowded inside the arc. If we had an Erin Higgins (who could nail them consistently from downtown - I recall her hitting a few from halfway out to midcourt) it would shake up those defenses. Then we could also drive into a less crowded interior.

Our guards who tend to drive (TT and Gabbi) go too far inside and try to shoot within a foot or so of the centers (or bang it against the bottom of the rim) - an exercise in futility. If they could be trained to stop halfway in and hit the mid-range jumper we would be doing better. I'm not sure why they can't do that. It is the one thing Gioya may be able to give us.

One positive about the 3's is that most are very close. That suggests the odds should turn in our favor at some point. Almost all of them look like they could go in, but just bounce a bit wrong. It is not like most are "bricks".

The issue is pretty simple. We haven't started hitting yet. And I look at that as a positive- hopefully Around that March area, it all comes together. In the mean time, we have had opportunities to beat two top 5 teams in the 4th quarter on their home courts. Promising signs.
