both involving Calvin "the animal" Newell.

Capel said/implied that:

1. Newell is a two guard
2. Newell will be a "lockdown" defender

Number 1 could explain why it is that Coach Capel is still bird dogging PG prospects in the 2011 class (ex Tharpe and Boatwright).

I will leave you with a cool Capel/Newell pic:

This is good to see. Calvin has got to get ready to face Marcus Stokes from Malibu Prep.

BTW, you can' really tell from this picture, but does it look like to you from the videos and things on Soonersports.com that Capel has lost a little weight since last year?

I would have gone that way too with all the anxiety from last year :)

Newell is ripped up pretty good for a freshman. Dang.

I was just about to post this. After looking at all the practice/individual footage and pictures, I'm surprised by how defined his body is for a Freshman in the preseason.

Newell could be the steal of OU's recruiting class. He's obviously a big time scorer, averaging 26 plus ppg at a Carolina prep school, and more than 29 ppg at the Philly high school he attended. Going off for 28 and 37 points respectively against prep powers like South Kent and Winchendon, programs that routinely recruit and sign some of the best players in the country, is no easy task.

I also like what I have seen of him on video, and as Sooner23 pointed out earlier, he definitely passes the eye test. If Capel is right about his defensive skills, it may be hard to keep him on the bench when the season gets underway. If for no other reason, we're going to need his offense.

Wow! Many of us have been excited about Calvin's potential as a scorer. But for Capel to state/imply he'll be a lockdown defender makes me even more anxious to see this kid play.

This freshman class seems physically ready to play D1 ball. This team might be A LOT better defensively this year, especially on the perimeter.

No doubt, I was thinking he could be the big steal too!
