Just depends on what you want. Kobe didn't want rings, he wanted money. He's a sociopath that no one wants to play with now that he's not playing at HOF level anymore.

Dirk wanted rings, and the way to make that happen was to risk it and take a pay cut to try to bring in guys for one last run. Didn't work out, but I doubt Dirk is hurting for the money.

They likely would have likely been one of the top 5 or 6 teams in the league along with GSW, SA, OKC, Houston, and Cleveland. Low-level contender, but contender nonetheless. Parsons-Dirk-Jordan is a great 3-4-5 trio. There's no way LA could have competed. The teams the Mavs have been putting on the floor these last couple years could run Kobe's squad out of the gym.
