Does Capel get any credit tonight or not?

Just curious. I know this wasn't a monumental or season changing win, but after focusing on defense the last three days, there was noticeable improvements at times. Left too many shooters open for 3, especially in transition.

Capel also drew up a great play out of a timeout for an And1 to Fitz when GW had cut the lead to 4. They never threatened after that play.

yes, he gets credit for coaching the sooners to a victory over gardner-webb.

Woo Hoo! Way to go Jeff! Big win tonight over Gardener Webbs!

Rock and Roll! How many times can we play them this year? Let's try to play them 20 more times.

CONGRATULATIONS!

How's that?

He get's credit for the 1-3-1 wrinkle. Too bad it's on opposing teams scouting reports now.

I'm giving him credit because when Gardner-Webb cut the lead to four, Coach Capel made sure their run ended right there. Now, he needs to have them ready for Saturday. A win may very well give us some great momentum for the Cincinnati game.

Wow. You make a positive post and 6 people show up to crap on it.

I agree, Capel did a good job by mixing up the defenses. It was a big reason Gardner Webb was shut down most of the 1st half. If it weren't for a BS 3-pointer by a PF at the buzzer, G-webb would have scored 15 pts in a half. A big critizism by many on this board is that Capels guys dont play defense. 18 pts in a half against a team that averages 34 per half is not bad. 2nd half wasn't as good, but 58 pts is still an improvement.

Gardner Webb is garbage, OU should be able to run any defense against them and have no problems winning. I am glad OU won but they are one of the worst teams OU will play all year.

I am a great fan of OUhoops11, but you don't start a positive post by saying "Does Capel get any credit or not tonight? Just curious." It was an antagonistic post, not a positive one, and the sorts of responses received are the kind he was looking for.

Not sure why it couldn't be both.

Many threads have been started asking if Capel can coach, and if so, what he is coaching or what he has done well during games. Well, tonight, he certainly did some things well.

There's not a single poster who wants Capel fired who had the guts to come on here tonight and say something along the lines of "Well it's obvious how hard they worked on defense during practice this week", or "Gotta give it up to Capel for his game plan", or "Great timeout and play drawn by Capel to stop GW's momentum and get us an easy bucket", or "Good job by Capel keeping the guys calm and focused when adversity hit". Not one. They had to come here and qualify the win with "GW is a terrible, terrible team" BS.

I just love how fans can bash a coach for losing a game, but have too much pride and too big of a desire to be right on a message board to give that same coach any credit after we win, even if it was against a subpar mid-major. It's almost like some on this board want OU to lose just to enforce their argument for firing Capel. It's really sad.

Gotta give it up for Capel and the guys for taking care of business down the stretch tonight.

Capel made a great coaching decision with that zone. Having Cam Clark at the top of the key was great coaching. With his speed and long arms GW really struggled to run their offense, this was evidenced by Clark's back-to-back steals and then a forced turnover on 3 straight possessions.

Also, just to talk about defense. This was one of our better defensive games of the season, which just continues my belief that Nick Thompson is the absolute worst defender on this team.

Good job Coach Capel. Way to have the guys ready to play tonight. BEAT oru! BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!

agree with the 1-3-1 sentiments. it was huge for cam and blair tonight. cam's length and pressure created a couple steals and run-outs for himself, which i think got him going some. and blair was able to run the baseline and play better defense by hiding his weakness in guarding the ball at the top. it should be a big part of our defensive identity going forward. it think we should play it at least half of the time the other team has the ball. it's been a nice, junk changeup for us in the past when austin and omar were running the baseline. but we are so limited athletically on defense that i think it needs to be more than something that is played once every 5-6 possessions. the only drawback is if fitz or thompson are defending the wing opposite of cade/pledger.

we also forced two shot clock violations. i don't remember if that's happened yet this season.

I think it should be a big part as well. I would like seeing Nick at the point position as well. OU would need to figure out how to rebound out of it and make sure they reach the wing 3pt shooters out of it. I think they can run and jump out of it too or extend it to half court.

.

Honestly, I don't care about beating Gardener Webbs Directional College for Advanced Basketweaving. Beat ORU, and I'll offer some props. Beat Cincy and I'll offer some props. Win 6 games in conference and I'll give props.

He could beat Gardener Webbs Community College 20 more times and I don't care. They are nobody. A game we should win every time.
