Done with college basketball

"Men’s basketball teams selected to play in the 2015 Postseason NIT will compete using experimental rules, including a 30-second shot clock and a four-foot restricted-area arc. The rules will be in effect for all 31 games of the tournament."

Well, the women have been using the 30 sec clock for a while. So that will speed things up a bit, but they are still plagued with too many games with too few points.

Why do people think the 4 foot restricted area will improve things more?

Teams are stacking too many people in the outer part of the lane making driving a gamble with much greater impact of officials calls - many of which are questionable. A big percentage of the charge calls are incorrect or quite questionable. How will that be fixed?

I can't stop watching college basketball because I love to watch the Sooners compete in just about anything.

That said, the poster makes a couple of good points. There are more constructive ways to discuss it, but two issues need to be addressed.

1) Shot clock. 35 seconds is too long. Needs to go to 24. No reason for a 35 second clock.

2) Fouls - games have become brawls. Post players get beat on down low just trying to get position and then hammered when trying to shoot. Guards are hand checked constantly. Players cannot get open looks because they are held and bumped trying to come off screens.

The difference between the game now and the game in 80s is vast. I don't enjoy watching brawls. I like watching athleticism. The game needs to be called tighter to change the game. The NBA realized what happened when Detroit style basketball took over and changed the way games were officiated to allow the athletes to be stars. It has been good for the game. College needs to follow suit.

To me, a prime reason for Mich St's success is that they are very accomplished at playing that style. Izzo recruits very good talent and teaches them the brawl style. When they get to the tournament and teams are allowed to play and fewer fouls are called his style works.

To follow-up on my point, it says a lot about the state of college basketball when this OU team was considered a high powered offense. I understand that we were and we were highly ranked in offensive efficiency. Compare that to the 80s/early 90s and look at the difference.

Shot clock definitely needs to drop. Men's college is the ONLY league that doesn't have less than 35, as even the women dropped to 30. Why on earth would they not have dropped both at the same time?!

At least dropping it to 30 would give a good trial run, and going to 24 would be very nice to match the NBA. Just needs to go down, you can take your time coming up the court, pass it around a bit, have a deflection or two, get the ball back, look up and 11 seconds are still on the clock. It's beyond ridiculous

True, I can't even watch the NBA anymore with the horrid play.

Blacktop ball is now their venue.

the nba is a lot better brand of bball than we are seeing in college ball.

Not sure why all the nba hate. It is a very good level of bball and skill

This is what J.J. Redick had to say about the topic.

"I can’t watch college basketball. I can’t watch it,” he said, unprompted. “I watch Duke games occasionally. This [season] was the most I’ve ever watched. I probably watched eight games this year.”

Jay Bilas thoughts:

"Jay Bilas is the leading television voice in the sport – a smart, outspoken and fully confident guy who has both played and coached the game. And Jay Bilas basically says college basketball sucks right now.

Actually, “unwatchable” is the modifier he’s often used. He has a point.

Here is the biggest problem as it relates to the game as a whole: it is ugly and slow and unskilled."

Gosh, I thought I enjoyed watching college basketball, but I must have been wrong. I mean, if JJ Redick and Jay Bilas say it's unwatchable, I guess it must be.
