NORMAN — Freshman guard Chelsea Dungee didn’t come into Norman with the expectation that she’d be an instant starter for the Oklahoma women’s basketball team.

But it only took her four games to earn a starting job.

The Sapulpa product is averaging 7.8 points a game as the team heads to Las Vegas for the 2016 Puerto Rico Classic.

Q: How did you find out that you’d be a starter?

A: Really, it was a surprise. I just worked hard in practice.

I just went into the locker room one day and coach lists the five people who are going to start before we run out, and my name was on there. I had no idea before practice or anything.

I think it just comes from hard work and determination, just being focused on in practice on what’s really going on or what she’s really looking for.

I think the more the season is going on, I get more comfortable in my role. It was just a surprise.

Did you think you’d have such a big impact on the team so early in your career?

When I first got here, I was really nervous and I was so worried about doing every single thing right that I turned into a robot for a second.

The more the days go on, the more practice I participate in, the more games I get in, I get more comfortable and I think my real potential comes out.

You moved from a Class 2A Preston to 6A Sapulpa midway through your career, did that help you make the adjustment to college?

It really did because of the talent. I think there’s more talent in 6A and I had to bring my A-game every single game.

In 2A, you might run across, every once in awhile, a good player. But it didn’t push me. So I moved to a 6A school and every game they pushed me and challenged me to do things. I think that definitely helped me here.

I think each building block taught me something.

It’s really built up and it’s really, really helped me. I’m so glad that I did that change.

What are you looking forward to about the Puerto Rico Classic in Vegas?

The competition. Cal is 9-0 and I’m really excited to play them. You definitely want to be the first person that they lose to, so I’m really looking forward to that.

Xavier, Portland State, they’re all really good competition but I think that we have more pieces than they do. I look forward to it.

How is going to Las Vegas this time around different than when you went for AAU tournaments?

In AAU, we kind of laugh and play. It’s not as serious because if you win or lose, everybody wants to win, but if you win or lose, it really doesn’t affect your record. I think that right now, we’re sitting at No. 20, and if win these three games, I think that will definitely push us up in the rankings so we can host (the NCAA Tournament) here.

It’s a big opportunity for us.

Good story, and a bit of a surprise. With all four guards returning, three of whom had been starters for two years, a freshman starter wasn't expected.
