RECRUITING CONFIDENTIAL: Bronx big man commits to Oklahoma after JUCO stint

Edson Avila was ready to go to Manhattan College, ready to play Division I basketball. Then, late in his senior year, he received the depressing news. The 6-foot-10 big man from The Bronx was a non-qualifier. It was at that moment his life changed -- for the better. “That was a wakeup call,” he told The Post. “I know I had to get my things straight. I had to change.”

Two years later, after maturing on and off the court at Seward County Community College in Kansas, refining his skills and taking academics seriously, Avila is doing a lot better than the MAAC -- he signed with Oklahoma of the Big 12, picking the Sooners over Gonzaga and Memphis, this week. “It feels amazing just to have a chance to play in the Big 12,” said Avila, the former Thomas Jefferson star who will major in physical education at Oklahoma. “Every night is going to be a challenge.”

Avila broke into the starting lineup at Seward halfway through his freshman year, after current Southern Miss starter Daveon Boardingham got hurt. When Boardingham returned, Avila remained the starter, making Boardingham his personal Wally Pipp and helping Seward to a third-place finish in the national junior college tournament. This past season, he averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game as the Saints went 25-8 and won the Jayhawk Conference's West Division.

Seward assistant coach Jason Sautter raved about Avila’s defense and rebounding, how well he communicates with his teammates and his ability to score with either hand around the basket. “[Oklahoma] is going to get a guy who works hard, a guy who wants to be coached, a guy who is going to be a great teammate,” Sautter said. “He plays hard. He’ll take charges, he’ll block shots. He’s going to be a good player for them.”

Having to take the junior college route forced Avila to grow up, to take school seriously, he said. In high school, Avila did just enough to get by, on the court and in the classroom. That wouldn’t fly at the next level, and after a brief transition period, Sautter said Avila did everything that was asked of him. “Where I was coming out of high school to where I’m at now, it’s a huge difference,” Avila said. “It feels good, just to know hard work really pays off. It tells me I have t keep getting better and better. I’m pretty proud.”

With the departure of All-Big 12 forward Romero Osby, Andrew Fitzgerald and starting forward Amath M'Baye, Lon Kruger and his staff needed to add depth to a depleted Oklahoma roster.

Kruger continues to rebuild the interior of his team with key losses in M'Baye and Osby. They took care of one need with the signing of Seward (Kan.) Community College's Edson Avila Wednesday. Avila, a 6-foot-10 power forward, figures to round out a front line that will likely feature Ryan Spangler, Cameron Clark and D.J. Bennett. The Sooners had already signed one big man last November in junior college-transfer Keshuan Hamilton.

Seward men's basketball coach Bryan Zollinger thinks Oklahoma has signed a quality defensive player with a high basketball IQ in Avila. "He plays very hard," Zollinger told SoonerScoop.com. "He's very active, especially at the defensive end of the floor. He's a very a good team defender, very vocal on defense. He can take charges, block shots, rebound, defends the post."

As a sophomore Avila averaged 11.4 points and 5.8 rebounds for the Saints while earning All-Jayhawk Conference Second Team honors. He started 30 games last season for Seward en route to a 25-8 season.

He reportedly brushed off offers from Gonzaga, Oklahoma State and Memphis in favor of the Sooners. "As soon as I walked onto campus at OU and met the players, I got the same feeling of family as I have here at Seward and knew it was the right place for me," said Avila in a Seward press release. "I am really looking forward to competing as hard as I can for the next two seasons for my coaches and teammates."

Avila, from the Bronx in New York City, was an AAU teammate of current Sooner and sophomore to be Isaiah Cousin for year during their high school careers.

Lon Kruger added his thoughts on Avila's signing through a university release Thursday. "Edson is a mobile athlete who has a good feel on both ends of the floor. He'll impact our club right away and fit in perfectly," said Kruger. "He's got great awareness defensively and will do whatever he can to help his teammates on that end of the floor be better. Edson brings a great work ethic, enthusiasm and a team-first attitude, and is the type of player you love to have in your program. We're excited he's a Sooner."

Men's Basketball Signs Juco Big Man Avila
Seward County (Kan.) Community College post player Edson Avila hails from the Bronx in New York City

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head men's basketball coach Lon Kruger announced Thursday that junior college big man Edson Avila has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Sooners and will join the OU program for the 2013-14 season.

Avila (pronounced ah-VEE-la) is a 6-10, 225-pound sophomore at Seward County (Kan.) Community College who earned first-team all-region honors this past season after averaging 11.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.1 blocked shots and 1.0 assist per game while shooting .580 from the field. He helped the Saints to a 25-8 record after they went 31-7 and finished third in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament his freshman season. Both squads won the Jayhawk Conference's West Division.

Avila started all 30 games in which he played as a sophomore and scored in double figures 20 times. He recorded four double-doubles on the season, including a 24-point, 11-rebound effort against Colby Community College.

Originally from the Bronx in New York City, Avila was an AAU teammate of OU sophomore-to-be Isaiah Cousins for a year in high school. Cousins hails from Mount Vernon, N.Y.

The Sooners are coming off a 20-12 season in which they went 11-7 in the Big 12 and tied for fourth place. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 23rd time in the last 31 years.

OU HEAD COACH LON KRUGER ON AVILA:
"Edson is a mobile athlete who has a good feel on both ends of the floor. He'll impact our club right away and fit in perfectly. He's got great awareness defensively and will do whatever he can to help his teammates on that end of the floor be better. Edson brings a great work ethic, enthusiasm and a team-first attitude, and is the type of player you love to have in your program. We're excited he's a Sooner."

SEWARD COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE HEAD COACH BRYAN ZOLLINGER ON AVILA:
"He runs the floor well, is real active defensively and is a high-energy guy. He has improved a lot offensively and was a good force for us this year, but he's still developing on that end of the floor. He hits some occasional 15-foot jumpers from the short corner or free throw line area, but he scores a lot more off of post-ups, pick-and-rolls, offensive putbacks and in transition.

"In the two years he was with us, one of the things that made him valuable defensively is that he does a good job of getting in a stance and moving his feet despite him being 6-10. He can switch -- help on a guard on ball screens -- whenever it's necessary and keep guys in front of him. He's physical in the post and is real long-armed, so he can change shots just by walling up; he doesn't need to be jumping and doesn't get into foul trouble all the time. He's a very good team defender. He can guard his guy and help on others. He rotates well.

"He's been one of, if not the most, popular kids on campus over the last two years. He's a very outgoing, happy-go-lucky, gregarious kid. He's kind of a showman and is really good at getting the crowd involved."

He sounds like the right kind of a kid. I hope he turns out good enough to be of some help.
