El Reno coach Jennifer Douglas had only one thought as Piedmont’s buzzer beater splashed in.
“Oh God,” Douglas said. “Not this again.”
It was a familiar feeling for Douglas and the Indians as they hosted Piedmont in the championship game of the Class 5A regional at Jenks Simmons Field House on Monday night.
As Piedmont junior forward Maci Attalla knocked down a jumper at the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied at 40, it brought back memories of last season when Piedmont knocked off El Reno three times, twice by two points and once in an overtime contest in the area tournament.
But this time, Douglas said she had confidence in her team to rally back.
“This year we have the experience,” she said. “We had three seniors on the floor to close it out so I told them to pick their heads up and let’s go play.”
It was her seniors that did close it out, as Emily Bellymule added two of her 10 points in overtime, and Hayden Freeman knocked down the go-ahead free throws to give El Reno the 46-44 win, and claim the regional title.
El Reno was led in scoring by junior Merzedes Macias, who finished with 13 points. Piedmont was led by Melissa Green with 15 points and Attalla added 12.
