It seems to me Sherri has evolved over time as the girls game has evolved.

The girls game is far more athletic and less skill driven than when she started.

The tall girls are far better than they were years ago. There are more of them playing ball now than ever before.

Boys "are" basketball players, and whether realistic or not, aim at being basketball players forever. Girls play basketball to have something to do, pay for college etc. Girls have far more on their plate than boys do at the same age.

In the boys game, with everyone being athletic and skilled, individual development of players is not important, it is everything -- period. Coaches that spend a lot of the time they are allotted with kids on team issues, are usually looking for new jobs before long. The good coaches spend their allotted time checking to see if the kids have spent their "voluntary" free time lifting, shooting, dribbling etc. To be good in the boys game, a kid has to work at his trade 24/7/365.

Generally, girls, save and except a few, are not that driven or committed. But that is where we are going in the girls game.

Sherri has evolved into getting more athletic and taller girls. Gone from a pure guard 3 point shooting strategy to an inside out game. She has had to learn to switch defenses and run people off the 3 point line more etc.

All of the above is said to suggest, that further development will require adopting some of Lon's method. Lon is almost entirely focused on individual development. He and his staff spend most of their time working on getting kids to be the best they can be as individual players, and then gets them to understand team concepts over time. Consequently, almost everyone that plays for lon gets better over time.

The difference between winning and losing in the girls game right now is so thin, I believe that the key to next year is not new players, but rather, just every kid on the squad being introspective getting a little bit better in the areas wherein they are deficient.

If they all do that, we will be improved whether Mulkey and/or Dungee help.

I think there is a lot to what you have to say. When I watch the men, I often see some of the problems that plague the women. Often, they get off to slow starts. But, frankly, the top of the Big Twelve men are a lot better than the bottom. The women have two or three teams that aren't somewhat formidable. E.g., K State gave Baylor trouble after beating us, although the final score may not show that.

This was a team that I thought would be a lot better than it has been. I thought we had the pieces. Kay Kay, Peyton, Gabbi, and Gioya were back. Maddie would be a nice, athletic addition. But, I have been very disappointed with the play of the returning starters. Gioya's injury didn't help, and that may have been an issue this year. We have some players still recovering from injuries. ACL injuries are more prevalent in the women's game.

I've also been surprised at the shooting slumps. I'm not sure what the cause of the slumps has been. Sherri hinted that they have a tendency to go into a slump together or shoot well together, group slumps.

But, what has concerned me more is that I see the same mistakes among key players that I saw when they were freshmen. Kay Kay and Gioya tend to make the same fouls in the same way, a lot of frustration fouls. There is a turnover-foul problem, as well as a missed shot-foul on rebound problem. Kay Kay is as afraid at times now as she was as a freshman. Gabbi learned not to make certain mistakes last year by midseason. Now, she makes those mistakes again. Is it a refusal to learn or a lack of concentration?

One of my favorite players on the men's team was Quannas White. So often, when a team loses focus, it takes a strong on-court leader to get control. I saw White as that type of point guard. He controlled the situation, better at that than he was as a scorer.

I don't know that we have had that type of point guard with the women. Frankly, I saw something in Maddie that caused me to think she might be that type of point. But, she's a forward now. We need someone to step up as the leader who says, "enough of this crap," and calls a time out on her own to get control of things. At times, I've seen Maddie tell someone what they should have done after a foul or missed rebound attempt.

It's that combat sergeant that I think we need. Next year, we add three: Rich, Mulkey, and Dungee. I don't think any will be that as freshmen. I had hoped that Gabbi would be that way. I'll be happy when we make a couple of turnovers, and a player signals for a time out on her own and takes control of the team on the sidelines. I think it is mental (and I've seen it on the men's team too).

Syb, I think that was the most honest, fair evaluation I have ever seen you post.

I agree with you.

Our team is far more athletic, top to bottom, than it was back in the day - 7-8 years ago? when Ole Miss ran circles around us in the NCAA tournament.
