Five years ago today in Memphis...

I remember most of that game. my brother and I decided to do shots of gin for every three pointer we made. It was awesome

One of my favorite OU basketball wins.

That entire game can be seen on YouTube, watched it a few weeks ago when I was bored, unbelievable how good we were with Blake and Taylor. Could have won it all that year with better coaching.

If Blake hadn't gotten injured against Texas, OU would have been a #1 seed and likely have gone to the Final Four. However, that was a very good North Carolina team we lost to. There are probably about 25 NCAA tournament OU basketball games I can point to which we got worse coaching than that one. I can always live with losing to the eventual national champion deep in the tournament who was a higher seed than we were.

Yep, so much for the committee giving teams a break when their star is injured.

Heh. We weren't going to beat UNC with Phil Jackson.

We would have had a fighting chance in that game if we are anywhere in the region of respectability from 3. It was brick frekkin city

You may be right about that. There is no way to know for sure. But, I never came to that conclusion.

We needed to get hot from the 3pt line, which we were most certainly not that day. Some hot-shooting and a lead to make UNC tighten up, we could beat them.

My point was Willie Warren going stone cold from 3 was not a coaching issue.

Got to go to Memphis for that. Good spot for a weekend. That was a fun jaw dropping year. Jeff could coach, he just couldn't run a program. If KS had red shirted Longar, he would have been a senior on that team, Phil Jackson could have won with that squad.

It's refreshing to read objective opinions like that. There was both good and bad with Coach Capel...certainly not all bad. I'm glad we have Coach Kruger, but my blood doesn't boil when I think about his predecessor.

2009 was a special season. It was arguably the third best OU team ever (hard to gage those teams from 1939 and 1947). And for those like me who had to endure the Syracuse trash-talking crowd in the 2003 Elite Eight, it was an even more rewarding season.

If you stop and think about the best-played OU NCAA Tournament games - meaning the games we played well from start to finish (sorry '88 against Villanova and '02 against Arizona), the 2009 game against Syracuse may be second to the Final Four game against Arizona in '88. That Arizona game was more competitive, but they were a lot better team...far and away the best team we ever beat in March.

Yep, IIRC that Arizona team had Sean Elliott, Tom Tolbert, Steve Kerr, and Buechler? They were loaded.

I'm not sure I would call them the 3rd best OU team ever...but top 5 for sure. Obviously the '88 team is 1, '89 team is prob 2, 2002 was a great team, but the 1990 team was fantasic as well...finishing the season ranked #1 in the coutry heading in to the tourney. That team had Skeeter, Jackie Jones, Slim Patterson, Smokey McCovery, terry evans, william "cheese" davis, tony "the hawk" martin...that team was LOADED!! 2009 is in that group though.
