Former UK Player Speaks About Gillespie

seriously, this is what you guys are talking about.....Billy Gillespie at OU?

is he even a candidate for other schools...he's not. word on horn boards was he was angling for the TCU job....and boozing pretty good.

this is OU basketball. one of the top 20 programs in the last 30 years. we can do better. as much as sad ass, poor taste hah hah i've seen on this board about Eddie and Sean Sutton's alcoholism.....seems kinda weird to just go "pro Billy G" all of a sudden.

I don't have a problem with Sooner23 liking BCG. You can't deny he was a good coach. My thing is you should look forward and not look back if you're going to make the change. You should also look at what Capel failed at and find a coach that can do it better. Capel's failing is at recruiting. He misevaluated role players and missed or either failed to get the program building blocks to buy in. Now what will BCG do if he gets the job? He'd go back to wheeling and dealing in Texas for recruits. However, he's burned some bridges in Texas and I don't see OU being able to jump Texas, TAMU, Baylor, or OSU in the fight for Texas players. Also, Texas players are somewhat overrated to me once you get outside of the top 5 or so.

I'm for giving Capel another year. He needs to make about 2 maybe 3 more moves to gets some better role players. Next year he needs to be looking at a pg, Clark, Pledger, Osby, and Fitz as a lineup. That's a decent lineup. But we need to bring some heat off the bench. Newell is a good bench option, Goff maybe. But after that, you need 2 or 3 more guys.

But if we're talking about names, I think Gregg Marshall is a legit name. I like Cuonzo Martin, forgive me but I like Butch Pierre, a guy who is a hell of a recruiter Steve Woodberry is another assistant that may be worth. Terry Evans may be a guy that should get some looks, and the homerun would of course be Buzz Williams

Pretty much in the same boat, think you give Capel one more year and if it doesn't work out, you've got Marshall a few hours away in Wichita. Guy is a winner.

This is also a program that in its current state had to hire the video coordinator because no assistant coaches wanted to come here with the Gallon issue hanging overhead.

As long as that's there, you can throw out the "This is OU Basketball we're a Top 20 program" talk because we're going to be looking at either taking a chance on a guy like Gillispie or hiring another up and comer type similar to Capel. While I would love to have a Greg Marshall or Buzz Williams, they won't sniff this place until the Gallon thing is in the rear view mirror. Just like Turgeon turned down it down last time around with the Sampson phone call issues lingering.

Hopefully that will be past us when Capel is fired after this season or the next.

That's not completely accurate. The Video assistant, Phelps has been there with the promise of a promotion. Quiet is kept, he's really been the recruiting coordinator and the best inroads to Texas. He is also an ex-head coach. Goodman also was a number one assistant out east and didn't come back to OU to be DOB. He was looking to move up toe the number one assistant job at OU and then pursue a head coaching job with years under his belt. Personally, I like the assistants now instead of Barnes and Cline, two older guy who probably were'nt big fans of hitting the road. I'm not sure if Bett's is a big fan of hitting the road.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on that one.

As Mike Gundy would say "that ain't ac-crut!"

Turgeon turned down the OU job because he was told that taking the OU job would prevent him from ever becoming the head coach at KU. I heard this from a very good source who is a close friend of Turgeon's. The phone sanctions had nothing to do with it because in the end they weren't a big deal (no ban from postseason and no ban on television appearances).

I am a huge proponent of Gregg Marshall and have been since 2007 when he was at Winthrop.

I became a proponent as a possible Sampson recruiter in 2000 when we played his Winthrop team in the NCAA tournament. You could tell way back then that he was a good young coach. In 2006, when Sampson left for Indiana, I was the only person that I can remember on OUInsider pimping Marshall. Had we have hired him we would not be in this position right now. I think he would crawl to Norman for the job right now. So, don't wait a year, can Capel asap and go get Marshall.

As Mike Gundy would say, "Get your facts straight!" The sanctions weren't announced yet and Turgeon didn't want to take the chance of coming into his first big-time job with his hands cuffed. Fact The can't go from OU to KU thing is laughable.

I would love to have him, but he would not "crawl here" unless the Gallon issue is resolved. Again, just like Turgeon didn't.

Some of y'all are falling into the same trap we did when Sampson left. "This is a great program! Hire Pitino! Hire Calipari! We can hire a great coach!" Then Capel came out of nowhere after about a month of searching.

It didn't happen last time around and it won't happen now. Hell, Gillispie might not even want this place. It's going to be a journeyman coach needing a second chance or another Jeff Capel starter kit -- Cuonzo Martin type like DM suggested.

That's because I wasn't on OUI at the time ;).

I think he would be a good hire, either this spring or next. Problem is Joe C is going to have to decide what he wants to do, and put some feelers out there to gauge Marshall's desire to leave. If WSU makes the tourney (as they are expected to, MVC favorites) he might not be available next year. He turned down Iowa who was after him this past offseason. Think he is making in the $500,000-$600,000 range right now, so OU could pick him up at a bargain IMO. Especially given in 2007 he was "only" making $250,000 at Winthrop.

Problem is he has been flaky in the past...accepted a job to leave Winthrop for CofC and within 48 hours changed his mind. Not sure if that would still be an issue.

Don't think he would "crawl" here either. However, not saying the possible OU sanctions didn't have a say in Turgeon's decision, but I believe the KU cloud definitely played a part, was widely speculated. Have to remember that is his dream gig and when KU hired Self and he "struggled" at first, people were already asking for Turgeon. I remember this because I was living in KC at the time.

Furthermore, Marhshall is not in the same breath as some of the guys you mentioned. Personally I don't think the Gallon deal will be that big of an issue. I also don't buy into the "We're a top 20 program over the last 30 years!" statement as well...these things go in cycles and right now the Big XII's new make up will serve to be extremely competitive...especially once Pat Knight is canned March 14.
