Gabbi

The Big 12 coaches left Maddie off the list. Are they wrong?

So they only have a pre-season 1st team? I thought they usually had a 2nd and 3rd team as well.

I think it's kind of insulting to Peyton to be left out. She earned a first team spot last season.

Bria Holmes? Really? OU has eight players better than Bria Holmes.

Let them diss Maddie. She'll diss them.

She probably was considered. She could have been selected before Martin except Martin rebounds a lot better than Peyton.

As Maddie herself said she only got her confidence back after two consecutive years injuries toward the end of last year. This is the year that I expect that she will make the coaches wonder how in the world they could have left her off.

Hopefully she will start the year with both guns blazing. Nothing I would like to see more than for her to average 15 pts and 10 rebs this year.

Agreed. She hasn't earned 1st team merits yet, but there's no one I am rooting for more than her.

Honorable Mention (listed alphabetically by school)
Alexis Jones (Baylor), Breanna Lewis (K-State), Gioya Carter (Oklahoma), Peyton Little (Oklahoma), Kaylon Williams (Oklahoma), Veja Hamilton (TCU), Ariel Atkins (Texas), Imani Boyette (Texas), Kelsey Lang (Texas).

Yeah, I think she would have started for OU last year. And her achievements for last year:
Participated in the 2015 USA Basketball Pan American and World University Games Team Trials
Unanimous All-Big 12 First Team
WBCA All-America Honorable Mention
WBCA All-Region 5 Team

Seriously, I am sure we are not going to agree on this but I believe she is a valid preseason choice. But that's preseason, we will see how she does.

And dissing Maddie? I just don't see that at all. She did not receive any post season awards last year and no one can be sure where she is now until she plays in some games. I would guess the staff would have an idea but still practice is different that a real game. She did not do enough last season to prove she should be a preseason choice. I don't see that as a diss. If Maddie can come back from her injuries this year and play as she started both her freshman and sophomore seasons before being injured, then she will probably be looking at some postseason awards. I would love to see that and would hope to see her stay healthy. She looks so long and thin out there that she really scares me.

It isn't important that we agree. I don't put much stock in what sportswriters say. Coaches often don't even look at games before they vote, if they are actually the ones who vote.

My point:
---Bria shot 39.9% from the field. You want your scorers at least hitting over 40%.
---she shot 24.1% from three, hardly what you want from a scoring guard.
---she had about four rebounds per game, not really above a normal
---she committed a little over three turnovers per game, about the same as assists
---she wasn't that impressive at steals or blocks.

Exactly why was she All-anything? I feared about four players on the WV roster more than I did her, two of which are gone. She shot a lot, but she wasn't the one that kept them in games. She was too inaccurate, too likely to lose the ball on a mistake. I don't think she was any more than the fourth or fifth best player on their team. Peyton, Gioya, and Maddie were all better and more likely to win you a game. Gabbi was way better.

Some of these like Peyton, Alexis and Ariel will probably be first team at the end of the year. I think Pre-Season picks are very over rated, except for the obvious.

I agree. I don't pay attention to pre-season awards or rankings. Not saying no validity but I would rather see what happens in the season.

My All-Conference Team: for now
5-11 Jr Nina Davis Baylor
5-8 Sr Niya Johnson Baylor
5-6 Sr Zahna Medley, TCU
6-0 Sr Brittney Martin, OSU
5-9 Soph Gabbi Ortiz, OU

Second Unit:
6-7 Sr Imani Boyette (McGee-Stafford) Texas
6-3 Sr Kaylon Williams, OU
5-11 Jr Peyton Little, OU
6-2 Soph Maddie Manning, OU
5-10 Sr Seanna Johnson, Iowa State
5-10 Sr Veja Hamilton, TCU

I may have Boyette too high, but she was All Conference last year, although only starting 8 games. She was probably the biggest key to their late season surge, and certainly was the one who gave OU the most trouble. I anticipate that others like Kelsey Lang, Breanna Lewis, and Gioya Carter may step up. Alexis Jones is a likely year-end candidate. But, I think these players were the most significant to their team's success. Baylor should probably have another, but they had several who did well, but inconsistently with none really rising above. Davis and Niya really dominated.

Why Seanna Johnson? In all games, Johnson was the conference's leading rebounder last year, third behind Martin and Gardner (ahead of Davis) in conference play. She also shot about 44% from the field, 80% from the line to be Iowa State's second leading scorer.

Veja shot 52%.

Peyton led the conference in FT shooting, was fourt in 3PT% (Zahna was fifth).

I think Bria Holmes hasn't lived up to her potential yet, but if she does this season she will be a very tough stop. and I can see why she got the PRESEASON honor. She's really versatile.

Maddie hasn't done enough to warrant and preseason awards... But if she's truly back. She might get all of them next year.

That is if she gets touches. I think it'll be a disappointing season for one of our four guards - Maddie, Gioya, Peyton, or Gabbi. Somebody is going to receive a lack of touches, and that'll create problems with rhythm and confidence. I hope it doesn't happen, but I don't see how all four of them can live up to the hype with only one ball.

Lets be ready to support atleast one of them for taking a lesser role for the team, were going to need a Sharane this year- Somebody is going to have to do it. It won't be a glamorous position, but lets be ready to respect them for playing that way.
