I think this is a great hire. Certainly a difference in the coaches Sherri has brought over in all her hires.
I still believe keeping Colton on is a huge mistake but we will see where the chips fall?
Yes, on the surface it appears to be a "great hire". But there are so many caveats.
Just as you've stated, keeping CC was a huge mistake. She would have been better off having him to "resign" as well. Surely she has a fellow coach somewhere in the US willing to hire him; get a more diversified experience.
IF SC is not going to micro manage, CW is a great hire. But only time will tell, regardless of how rosy an opportunity SC presented... "Help me turn this program around with your great recruiting and defensive coaching...and you'll be on your way to a new head coach position in two years!" And they probably could relate/bond as guards in college while 5'6" and under.
Also, CW was available for hire since March 8th. What took so long? How many others contacted said "no"? This appears to be such a huge demotion for her, considering her great experience and academic achievements. Does this mean she will be behind CC on the seniority ladder since both are Assistant's rather than hiring her as an Associate HC? And what's taking so long for a second hire? Not a good sign.
I think we'll see more of the same over the next year or two. If the ship continues to sink and the team is back at the bottom mid conference...maybe SC will resign and CW will be interim coach, if CC doesn't get the call! And unless they get a few post players that can compete in the conference, the bottom of the conference is where they will land again. You cannot be competitive in today's game with a bunch of good guards, one really good guard and post players that would normally be at Div. 2's or NAIA at best. Recruiting great players will be tough.
