General college hoops game thread

I'm not a fan. Its toooo much. The last 4 seeds would have to win 7 games to win the whole thing? Might as well just keep out entirely at that point. Meeting in the middle of this concept and the traditional tourney model would be interesting tho
Yea I am in favor of giving the higher seeds an advantage, but there has to be some common sense. Even in the American, the top 2 seeds get byes into the semis. Seems a bit extreme.

I like it .. these leagues want their best teams to make the dance ..

but they have to have a tourney for the money it makes them ..

this is a good result ..
Like it or hate it, that is exactly why they are doing it. To give their best teams the best shot at getting the auto-bid.

Some things need to change though. I read that Miami, Ohio, the only undefeated team left, probably won't get in and unless they win their conference tourney. That is insane to me. I don't care what their schedule looks like, if they were to slip up once in the conference tourney, that is a team that should get an at-large bid.

I don't know about that. Their schedule isn't just bad. It is absolutely atrocious -- among the worst in the country. I don't think the committee wants to get in the habit of rewarding that. There is no reason they couldn't have found a handful of good noncon opponents.

This is where WAB is a great metric -- it can sort through all the disparate schedules. They may get in if they lose late in their tourney. But if they don't, it won't be as big an injustice as some will suggest.

History does not support 2 teams from their conference. I heard when it was done last, but I cannot remember now. But I think it was 20+ years ago. They'd better win the tourney..

Play a schedule imo
It would be more worthy and make more sense to allow an undefeated team in from a lesser conference than a 17-15 team from the SEC with losing conference record who finished 9th or 10th in their league. The 10th place teams don’t deserve to get in any more than Miami OH.

You can’t make that blanket statement. Depends on the specifics. There were more than 10 SEC teams last season better than this year’s Miami team. What if there is an undefeated team from an even worse league, like the SWAC? A team from that league could theoretically play 13 noncons against the worst teams in the country, then another 18 conference games against garbage teams.

I’m not anti-Miami and generally favor really good mid majors getting in if they earn it throughout the season, but earning it should at least mean SOME wins against quality teams.

I'm not going to say anything bad about Miami of Ohio. I still haven't forgotten about 1995. The last at-large team in the Dance was Manhattan as a #13 seed. They had an amazing season losing only a few games, but obviously did not win their conference tournament. They got selected, anyway, and lots of commentators and coaches basically said they weren't good enough based on their weak schedule. Well, they won by double-digits in their 1st round game against a #4 seed who had the Big 8 Player of the Year and National Coach of the Year winner. I'll keep it to myself which school that was :-).

I would like to see a one-loss team get an invite to the Dance and see what they can do in the round of 68...and I think they will get selected, deservedly or not.

You can’t definitively say there were more than 10 SEC teams better than Miami OH. That’s just opinion. Earning it means finishing in 10th place with a losing conference record according to you?
We’re not talking about national champs here. We’re talking about the last few teams in the tourney and we should give the benefit of the doubt to an undefeated or 1 loss team from a lesser league instead of a mediocre team from the P4.

you can say there are more then 10 sec teams THIS SEASON better then miami oh .. last season it is not even close ..

on a neutral floor they would be dogs to 14 SEC teams ..

I've always found the nomenclature of the "play in" games sort of iffy at best

But if they were truly a "play in" game by design would be where I would accomodate a Miami (OH) team that took an L in their conference tournament.

However, like I say.....play in game is just expanding the field. I've lost some interest in the Big Dance while "Cinderella" gets marketed out the wazoo the top seeds get protected. Jmo.

I love Cinderellas but I hate expansion.. anything beyond 64-68 teams will kill my interest. But also bc porter moser..
