Geno Auriemma: Coaches are afraid of their players

A few coaching buddies shared this in a group message. I think it's real even at the HS level.

In a sport where toughness and tenacity make a marked difference in results you must be able to instill those traits. Doing that necessitates imposing substantial burdens on the players. I can understand the coach's fear.

It’s a tough environment for sure.

So if you are a coach, you are guilty until proven innocent? Or, at least, some coaches seem to feel they are in this position.

It is rather amazing that "emotionally tough" coaches like Izzo have not only survived, but continue to thrive in today's game, and thrive for a long, long time.

He is right. We live in a society where it is easy to be a victim. Difficult for coaches to really get the best out of players today. You have to hope they already have Buddy Hield work ethic because it is difficult to instill it.
