I agree with the posters above in that he sounds like a kid with something to prove. From what I have heard, he came in and immediately impressed his teammates with this competitiveness and attitude.

And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my kingdom, I had finally arrived
