Miscellaneous thoughts

Thanks. That is what I figured and have heard also.
Have you heard any specifics? I ask because the failure to have a good NIL program was the primary reason WSU canned their AD a couple years ago. I doubt Joe will ever be fired -- more likely, he will decide to step away at some point.

It's so hard to evaluate him because for 20+ years, he was universally regarded as one of, if not the best, in the business. But it's undeniable that the past four years have been rough. Two big misses in hiring coaches for the two biggest programs. The NIL stuff. Rumors about the training staff and his involvement in hiring assistant coaches. I take a lot of it with a grain of salt because there is no way every rumor is true, and I also think a lot of it comes from people who are close with the coaches and want to shift the blame. But there is just so much stuff piling up.

I have details I can't share. I've let some trickle out here and there. But let's just say Joe has made some bets that haven't come through and it's put us behind the teams we are competing with for talent.

And, by the way, he's been regarded as one of the best, but if you look at things, I question why. A really big part of the job description is raising money. Our facilities in all sports are WAY behind our competition. And now, NIL is more important than facilities, so we have to figure BOTH out at a time where we should just be focused on NIL.

Best I was able to find we are not in the top 50 schools on basketball nil.

I don't have that kind of detail. But I do know of someone with a D1 prospect son who would have always looked at OU as the #1 option who isn't even considering it as is.

Never said Dayton, atak or the new signees are going to be great. Just that I like what I have seen of them. I like Fears as well. He has played great at times and like a freshman at times, I see that as to be expected. Surely, you don't disagree that Fears has potential.

Moser got the OU job late and after both signing periods and had to build a roster of kids that would play for a scholarship. He didn't get one dollar of NIL. He literally had to put a team together over the summer from a picked over selection and play amateur basketball in what had become a professional sport. Look, you don't have to like Porter or think he is a good coach, everyone gets to have an opinion and express it. But, OU and Joe know perfectly well the position they put him in and rightfully don't even consider his first year in any fair evaluation.

He had little to no NIL for this second year, and we lost players and recruits to higher paying teams.

His third year he was given a low but reasonable amount of NIL (bottom third of the Big 12), and he put together a team that should have been selected for the NCAA tournament. Haven't heard what he was given for this year or for the 2025 season. Read an article that it was towards the bottom of the SEC.

This post was not meant to sell porter as a great coach or a coach that will ultimately work out at OU. Just that if you are a fair person, there is an argument that he hasn't had the resources and time to see what he can do here. I don't particularly like his style of play, but he was a good coach before he got here, has done a decent job with what he had to work with, and there is reason to believe that we are going in the right direction.

As for this years team, we are 13-2 and our only losses are to two of the 10 best teams in the Country. You have every right to quit on the team any time you want, hate on Moser or whatever, but I hope our players have more fight and competitive persistence than some of you do. I don't mind the opinions, this is a message board, it amazes me sometimes though that some of you seem not to understand the human and financial consequences of willy nilly firing a coaching staff, on the coaches, their families, the kids on the team, and the University. I have two degrees from OU and have followed OU sports since the 60's. I want to win as much as anyone on this board. Maybe it is my age, but I just think it reasonable to have a little more patience with good people. Good coach or not, Moser and his staff, and the kids on his team, strike me a good people.

Since we are talking mostly about future events and therefore can't know with certainty how things are going to work out, the fire moser guys that believe he is a bad coach and won't ever win at OU could be right. But, I hope you you aren't and we turn into a championship program.

Again, terrible coaching caused us to collapse last night and lose a game we led by 18 in the 2nd half. NIL had nothing to do with that. And if coaches are afraid of getting fired and not being able to take care of their families then they need to pick a more secure profession.

Just this narrative about Joe C. I find it comical

Everyone has sources that says how bad the NIL is at OU and how out of it Joe C is
If you knew who my friend was, you'd probably listen. But out of everyone on the board, you'd be one of the last people I'd tell. No offense. Or offense, I don't really care.

classic

And even if your friend is someone in the know, it is still their opinion. Every organization is full of people and some of those people will not like the way things are run or have wrong perceptions about how things are run. Tale as old as time

In the short term, I would try starting Goodine and bring Elvis off the bench....anything is worth a shot at this point. It doesn't really help the defense, but it at least would give us a shot at pointing more points on the board out of the gate. But if the two hurt guys don't end up coming back and contributing.....we are what we are unfortunately.

If we aren’t going to do anything other than use one guy who is one of our better defenders (relative to our team only) on a guy who is white hot then we might as well just focus on offense. Offense is more fun for our team. The problem, of course, is that the offense still requires the ball movement and composure we used to get the 18 point lead as compared to the offense that lost it. A&M scored 47 points in the final 17 minutes after their timeout. During that same period we scored 27. And we were consistently mediocre to bad during that time. We scored 9 between 17:00 and 8:25 and we scored 8 in the last 8:25. ☹️

Sadly, we ended the first half similarly by scoring only 12 in the last 10:30. While our offense was very good at times, it was also very quiet during a large portion of the game.

I admire your desire at least try to keep it pieced together. Offense at least showed they could play well for 12-13 minutes. D never really consistently plays well. Guys did the best they could for their skills and what coaches are presenting and they made a few plays here and there. But they also had some of the most boneheaded plays I have ever seen. And I don’t think anyone on our team is capable of taking a charge. You’d think we might try it with a help man for as often as guys drive past us.

If we aren’t willing to get in a guy’s grill when he is hot and have a plan for when he drives past us then we might as well just focus on offense. Because we are going to have guys driving past us anyway.
