Gioya

Gioya is the player that I have been waiting for. Two years ago, I thought it was Maddie, and I still think Maddie and Gioya have the attributes that I wanted. But, I love the mid-range scorer who can hit the three or get to the rim. But, it is that fifteen footer that is the dagger for Gioya. The threes kill. But, the fifteen-footer in the lane is the thing that makes it all work. It is deadly, and it frees up others for passes.

But, she has to keep the motion going right in her mind.

Gioya is becoming (has become) everything I thought she'd be when I saw her for the first time last season as an OU freshman. I don't live in the OKC area, so I never got a chance to see her play in high school. Then, when I did get to finally see her play, she blew me away -- no, not because she had a great game, but because her awesome talent and potential were so evident.

So many fans demand instant gratification and if a young player fails to provide that from the moment they step on the court, the doubting and scoffing begin. I'm glad to say Gioya has silenced even the most vocal of her critics. A new superstar has arrived in Norman, and I believe one who is destined to be mentioned in discussions of the all-time Sooner greats.

Great post! I totally agree!

Aren't they all recruited because of potential?

Yes, They are. But, can you tell me all of the scouting services or magazines that had Gioya as a highly-rated prospect? That was pretty much Sherri and some locals.

I just looked back to see some of the ESPN ratings on OU players when they were recruited.

Gioya Carter 5-9 Not rated. No scouting report. Had a grade of 40?
T'Ona Edwards 5-5 Not rated. No scouting report. Had a grade of 40?
LaNesia Williams 5-6 Had a scout's grade of 90. No scouting report. Ranked 25 at her position.
Kaylon Williams 6-2 Had a scout's grade of 93. Position rank 16. Overall rank 59. Said she had a good basketball body and good mobility for her size.
Maddie Manning 5-11 Had a scout's grade of 94. Position rank 11. Overall rank 34. Was actually a four star recruit.
Sharane Campbell 5-10. Had a scout's grade of 92. Position rank 17. Overall rank 90. Did say that she played larger than her 5-9 frame.
Peyton Little 5-10. Had a scout's grade of 95. Position rank 8 Overall rank 30
Fairly positive scouting report said her long range shot came and went, but she can work for a shot.
Nicole Kornet 5-11 Had a scout's grade of 95 Position rank 6 overall rank 20
Four star. Scout liked her shot, said she could post up smaller guards.

If you looked at these reports, there is no reason to believe that Gioya would even get a D-1 scholarship. She had no accolades. Kornet was our most highly-regarded recruit.
