A little perspective here. Doyel tweeted for Drew to shaddup because Drew felt the treatment of Perry Jones was unfair by the NCAA.
Drew called him after that tweet to give his perspective. Drew does that. It is his style. Barnes whined to a NY Times reporter about Drew after Drew beat him in the Big 12 tourney and Drew called Barnes right away. A Lubbock reporter put words in Pat Knight's mouth about Drew and Drew called Knight right away.
I personally am a fan of that. Don't gossip like little school girls. Get to the root and settle things as men.
Probably should have done more background checks on Doyel to see what kind of beast he was dealing with...
Facts:
Drew called Doyel after that tweet to shaddup was released.
Drew clearly thought the tweet was referencing the Perry Jones situation.
Doyel starts asking him comments about the texting situation with Mark Morefield- his assistant. Drew cannot comment on that because the NCAA is wrapping up an investigation on it.
The three Indiana stooges are feeding Doyel info: Mike Barnett; Mark Adams and Alan Huss. I could write a novel about what is going on there, but here are the cliff notes on the Perea texting "scandal":
1. Baylor discovered Perea in Colombia and had all the relationships with players mom, coaches, etc..
2. Baylor referred Perea to Mark Adams' 501C charitable organization A-HOPE to help Perea get the necessary visas, paperwork to come to the United States to play high school basketball. Adams had done the same thing with foreign players that landed at UCLA, UNLV, Michigan State, Tennessee, etc...
3. Mark Adams' son- Drew Adams- takes a job on the Indiana University basketball staff.
4. Mark Adams is also a AAU coach of Indiana Elite. Mike Barnett is also an AAU coach at Indiana Elite and his son is a walk-on at IU.
5. Here's a shocker- Indiana University now has verbal or signed LOIs from the following Indiana Elite AAU players Hanner Perea; Cody Zeller; Austin Etherington; Ron Patterson; Peter Jurkin; Kevin Ferrell. Three of these players are top 25 in the nation players.
6. The A-HOPE 501c foundation took in over $400k of tax-free contributions to help them bring kids from Africa (and if the kid is elite Colombia) to the United States. Mark Adams runs this charity from his home. Visa fees are usually less than $2000 per kid. They have 8 kids currently in high school that they brought over. The good ones (in basketball terms) now all go to IU.
7. Mark Morefield at Baylor had a long term relationship with Mark Adams. When Adams' son Drew took a job with IU and started aggressively steering Perea to IU, Morefield felt betrayed.
8. The media report that Morefield threatened to deport Perea is salacious spin. Morefield evidently made a threat to Adams based on a belief that Hanner's guardian in Colombia would never sign an LOI for Hanner to attend IU. This would be necessary for Perea- a non US citizen to attend college.
9. There is no smoking gun on that text. No one has a copy. I'm sure that the last things Adams wants is the NCAA snooping around that donor list for A-HOPE.
FACTCHECKS
1. Doyel claims: Baylor coach Scott Drew called me a couple of days ago.
Truth: A couple of days implies that it was March 31st when he called. A technicality but did he call on March 31st or closer to the time the tweet was released? If we can't trust the little things, how can we trust anything he says?
2. Doyel claims: I told him (Drew) that I was angry that his assistant coach- Mark Morefield- had threatened to have Perea deported if Perea didn't follow through on his oral commitment to Baylor.
Truth: Mark Morefield was upset with Mark Adams, Mike Barnett and Alan Huss. Morefield knew these guys for many years. They were a high school coach (Huss at La Lumiere) and AAU coaches (Adams/Barnett- Indiana Elite). There was probably a gentleman's agreement in place that if Adams' charitable foundation (AHOPE) helped bring Hanner Perea (a kid that Baylor discovered in Colombia) to the US, that they would not do anything to undermine the relationship with Baylor.
Huss would benefit becuase he would get a stud HS player. Adams and Barnett would benefit because they would get a stud AAU player. Shortly after Drew Adams- Mark Adams' son takes a job on the Indiana basketball staff. Mike Barrett's son walks on at IU. Hanner Perea is aggressively steered to IU. Morefield feels betrayed. He shoots off an angry text to the coaches. The text I was told said that Hanner will not play at IU. Perhaps an empty threat but understandable given the level of betrayal. THERE WAS NEVER A THREAT TO DEPORT PEREA! To report that is ignorant at best; a flat out lie otherwise.
