UConn has a competitor, maybe two. The OU men's gymnastics team now wins national titles by huge scores that exceed even UConn's dominance. I think the defending national champion women's team exhibited such dominance over Bama tonight.
How dominant was OU?
--The vault: the top four scores were all from OU. One Bama vaulter tied two OU vaulters for fifth. Then, came the other five Bama vaulters. Not one Bama vaulter beat one OU vaulter.
--The bars: freshman Maggie Nichols won the event with a 9.975. Then, one Bama gymnast tied five OU gymnasts for second. Then, the remaining five Bama gymnasts were #8-12. Again, not one Bama gymnast beat an OU gymnast. Actually, OU dropped a 9.90 score, which was the same as the Alabama best score.
--The beam: OU probably had its worst beam performance in two years. Bama gymnasts took first and a two-way tie for fourth. The top four were interrupted by Maggie Nichols at #2. Then, it was a two-way tie for fifth with two OU gymnasts, a three-way tie involving two Bama gymnasts for #7-9. Then, OU finished #10 and #11 before an Alabama gymnast finished last. Bama actually beat OU on the beam, 49.350 to 49.225.
--The Floor: again, the top four were all from OU.
--All around: three gymnasts. OU gymnasts finished first and second.
An indicator of how great the difference was: scores dropped:
Alabama/OU
Bars: 9.750/9.900
Vault: 9.650/9.825
Beam: 9.300/9.325
Floor: 9.250/9.750
Twenty scores were not dropped for each team:
Alabama average: 9.835 Oklahoma average: 9.8875
